Yankees Game 37: Second string staff smacked by Dbacks

New York Yankees 12 – Arizona Diamondbacks 2

In his major league debut, Chad Green had to bring his bat as the Yankees go NL rules in Arizona.

After a scoreless inning by the Yankees against Robbie Ray, the Diamondbacks came to bat against Chad Green. After retiring the first batter, star Paul Goldschmidt took the rookie deep for a solo home run. Two more batters got on base with a pair of hits but a ground out kept the damage to one.

While the Yankees remained silent on the bats, the Diamondbacks were not slowed down by Green. Chris Hermann led off with a single before Green recorded the first two outs of the inning. Jean Segura hit a double through the infield to center for the second run of the game.

The Yankees started to rally in the fourth inning. Mark Teixeira led off with a double. Carlos Beltran followed with a single and Chase Headley brought home Teixeira with a single to cut the deficit in half. A pop out by Didi Gregorius just about ended the inning even though it was the second out of the inning. Austin Romine received the rare intentional walk because, in a National League ballpark, the pitcher followed. Chad Green proceeded to strikeout, ending the inning.

The Yankees manufactured a run with speed and some luck when Jacoby Ellsbury hit a deep fly ball to right-center field. As the throw came in from right field to shortstop Nick Ahmed to third baseman Lamb, it deflected off the helmet of Ellsbury and going into the crowd, giving Ellsbury a triple and a run scored on one base hit. But Green could not keep the game tied.

To start the fifth inning, Mark Teixeira committed a rare catching error on a ground ball that opened up the inning to an eventual bad ending for the rookie. Green walked Goldschmidt in front of Jake Lamb. The Diamondbacks third baseman missed a home run in one swing but didn’t on the next when he put a three-run home run in the right field seats. Yasmany Tomas got on base with a double, ending Green’s debut without an out in the fifth inning.

In four innings, Chad Green allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Nick Goody came on for Green and gave up two runs in the fifth inning, one inherited from Green and even a run batted in by starting pitcher Robbie Ray.

In the sixth inning, Conor Mullee made his major league debut by walking Michael Bourn. He recorded his first strikeout on Paul Goldschmidt but control continued to be a problem for the debuting reliever. After a walk of Lamb, Tomas grounded into a fielder’s choice but Mullee hit Drury before walking Hermann with the bases loaded. Another ground out ended the inning with one run scoring without the benefit of a hit.

Phil Coke came in for relief of the remainder of tonight’s game. He gave up one in the seventh inning and three in the eighth inning. After all was said and done, the Yankees surrendered 12 runs in the first of three in Arizona.

Win – Robbie Ray (2-2)
