ting the Mets for the second half of the Subway Series.

For the Mets, highly-touted prospect Rafael Montero got the call in an unfavorable situation; defeat the man that has won his past 33 decisions, counting back to his career in Japan. After a scoreless first inning, Montero would walk Yangervis Solarte with two outs. Brian Roberts would hit a line drive to left field that left fielder Eric Young Jr. decided to leave his feet for and miss, letting the ball roll all the way to the wall. Roberts would reach third and Solarte scored. The ill-advised dive looms larger because the batter to follow Roberts was Tanaka, who ended up flying out to right field to end the inning.

After a one-out single in the first inning, Tanaka would get 11 consecutive outs before a single to open the fifth inning. In the first inning, Daniel Murphy took advantage of an inattentive defense for an easy stolen base. In the fifth inning, Chris Young would attempt to steal second in the same way and was caught by Tanaka. After a double in the sixth inning, Tanaka would get seven consecutive outs as he cruised through this game.

Tanaka did not need insurance runs but who would say no to it? In the fourth inning, Yangervis Solarte would bring out his inner Reggie with some Beltre as he hit a laser into right field for his fourth home run of the season. In the sixth inning, Mark Teixeira hit his eighth home run of the season into the bullpens in right center. In the seventh inning, Brett Gardner hit an infield single and advanced on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Derek Jeter hit a ground ball between the pitcher Carlos Torres and the catcher Anthony Recker that featured a miscommunication and a fourth run scoring for the Yankees.

In nine innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed four hits and no runs without a walk and eight strikeouts. Tanaka is the first rookie to throw a complete game shutout since “El Duque” Orlando Hernandez in 1998. He has won his last 34 decisions, counting his time in Japan and the MLB.This is the second complete game shutout in the Subway Series. The first was in 2002 by Andy Pettitte.

In addition, Masahiro Tanaka got his first career hit in the ninth inning, a single into center field. And it did not take him 64 at-bats, Mets pitchers.

Win – Masahiro Tanaka (6-0)

Loss – Rafael Montero (0-1)
