The Yankees are no longer in last place! I repeat, the New York Yankees are no longer in last place! The series is already won, so Michael Pineda (1-5, 6.60 ERA) goes for the sweep against Jesse Hahn (1-1, 3.38 ERA) and the A’s. Pineda’s best start of the year was against Oakland back in April. He struck out seven while allowing two runs on seven through six innings in a no decision. His last start against the D-Backs, however, was not as good. He gave up five runs on nine hits through five and took the loss. In four career starts against the A’s, he is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA.
Big Mike has had difficulty this season pitching out of the stretch. Larry Rothschild has been working with him to make the proper adjustments.
“That’s the hope when you go to work, because the talent is there, and we’ve seen it,” Girardi said. “His numbers don’t make a whole lot of sense. The bottom line is, it comes down to him being consistent in his pitches. We thought we found a little thing, so he went to work on it and we hope he adjusts.”
Hahn rejoined the team last week after spending over a week in the Minors. He allowed three runs on 10 hits in a 6.2 inning no decision against Texas. He has faced the Yankees just once in his career, which was a losing effort last season. He gave up four runs (three earned) and seven hits in six innings with four K’s.
Tidbits:
Pineda is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts at the Coliseum.
Danny Valencia is the only active A’s bat with more than one hit against Pineda. He’s 2-10 with a triple.
Pineda has given up 58 hits in 43.2 innings, but is also averaging 10.3 strikeouts per nine.
