New York Yankees 4 – Oakland Athletics 5

A late rally turned a Yankees lead into a deficit they could not come back from.

After a scoreless first inning, the Yankees would get to A’s starter Kendall Graveman. Brian McCann would go deep for a solo home run. His seventh home run of the season was his first on the road. Tonight was his third straight game with a home run.

Normally in the third inning, CC Sabathia would have the bad inning that turned a lead into a deficit.

After getting the first out, Sabathia would surrender three consecutive singles to load the bases. In the defense of the hefty lefty, the three singles came on a pair of bloop base hits in front of the outfield and a seeing eye single just through the infield. With the bases loaded and one out, Marcus Semien and Ben Zobrist would go down on strikes to keep the lead and leave the bases loaded.

In the fourth inning, the Yankees had a strong start. Alex Rodriguez would hit a single and Mark Teixeira walked to put two on. Brian McCann got a base hit to center and Rodriguez attempted to score from second. The Yankees designated hitter would avoid a tag by catcher Josh Phegley, reaching back to touch the edge of the plate.

Initially called out, instant replay would overturn the call and the Yankees extended the lead to two.

Alex Rodriguez would extend the Yankees lead to three with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning but the Athletics would begin their rally.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Billy Burns hit a solo home run to get the A’s on the board.

In the sixth inning, a pair of familiar foes made Sabathia pay. Ben Zobrist led off the sixth inning with a double. Two outs later, Brett Lawrie would tie up the game with a two-run home run, his third of the season.

After surrendering the lead in the sixth inning, Sabathia returned to the mound for the seventh inning. He would allow a single and a walk before exiting the game. David Carpenter would come in for Sabathia and got the first out of the inning but Marcus Semien loaded the bases with a single and the struggling Carpenter would walk Ben Zobrist, breakin the and bringing in the go-ahead run. Another run would come in on a sacrifice fly, extending the A’s lead to two.

In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed five runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out four.

Brett Gardner would make it a one-run game in the ninth with a run-scoring double against A’s closer, and former Yankee, Tyler Clippard, but Chase Headley would fly out to center field with the tying run in scoring position.

Win – Evan Scribner (1-0)

Loss – CC Sabathia (2-7)

Save – Tyler Clippard (5)
