Yankees game 51: A’s win the pitcher’s duel in finale

New York Yankees 0 โ€“ Oakland Athletics 3

In the final game of a four-game series in Oakland, the Yankees and the A’s were locked up in a pitcher’s duel.

Adam Warren took the mound for the Yankees and went head-to-head with Jesse Chavez for the A’s. In the first inning, the Yankees got two on with one out but squandered the opportunity when Mark Teixeira struck out and Carlos Beltran grounded out. Another opportunity presented itself in the second inning when two reached base with one out. Jose Pirela would line into a double play with the trail runner on first base being caught off base.

Like Chavez, Warren received similar defensive support. In the fourth inning, Billy Butler reached on a single but a line out to Mark Teixeira produced the unassisted double play.

The pitcher’s duel was scoreless until the sixth inning when Warren and the Yankees blinked.

Billy Burns started the sixth inning with a single and was a thorn in the side of Warren, stealing two bases before the first out could be recorded. With the potential go-ahead run on third base and no outs, Warren was able to get Ben Zobrist to fly out to shallow left field, preventing the run from scoring. Stephen Vogt came through for the A’s though, hitting a fly ball just deep enough to get over the right field wall. The two-run home run was the only damaging mistake on the line of Adam Warren, who reached the seventh inning for his fourth straight start this season.

In seven innings, Adam Warren allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

Vogt provided all the offense for the A’s today. In the eighth inning, Esmil Rogers surrendered two hits with one out. Lefty Jacob Lindgren followed and got a fly ball from Vogt that was deep enough to score the A’s third run of the game.

One run or three runs; Jesse Chavez made it stand in eight shutout innings. Former Yankee Tyler Clippard came on for the ninth inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Alex Rodriguez and walked Carlos Beltran but a strikeout of pinch-hitter Brian McCann and a weak pop out by Garrett Jones ended the game.
