Yankees Game 51: Defense slacking behind Phelps

New York Yankees 0 — St. Louis Cardinals 6

The defense did Phelps no favors in his matchup with Lance Lynn.

The Yankees sent David Phelps to the mound against his favorite team growing up, the St. Louis Cardinals. In the third inning, third baseman Matt Carpenter hit against the shifted infield. The Yankees would benefit from a popped up bunt for the first out but a single and a ground-rule double plated the first run for the Cardinals. Yadier Molina would be intentionally walked for Allen Craig but the ground ball by Craig would become an error. The ground ball to Derek Jeter would be thrown off line and pulled first baseman Kelly Johnson off the base.

The second fielding error of the inning came when Brian Roberts whiffed on the ground ball to him, allowing two runs to score. Two errors and the Cardinals batting one time through the lineup in the inning gives Cardinals starter Lance Lynn a four-run lead.

With the way Lynn was pitching, four was more than enough. In the second inning, Brian McCann led off the inning with a double but was stuck at second after three consecutive ground outs. Two walks around a ground out would be wasted with a double play to end the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Brian Roberts hit a one-out double but he would reach third with the pitcher up and that ended the inning easily too.

In the fifth inning, Allen Craig would hit a solo home run off of David Phelps and reliever Alfredo Aceves would give up a solo home run to Matt Holliday in the seventh inning. In six innings, David Phelps allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits while walking two and striking out five.

Lance Lynn would give up two hits in his last three innings as he threw 126 pitches in a complete game shutout. The Yankees were hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Win – Lance Lynn (6-2)

Loss – David Phelps (1-2)
