Yankees Game 51: Hard luck loss for CC Sabathia

New York Yankees 1 – Toronto Blue Jays 4

The Yankees continued the series north of the border with CC Sabathia on the mound.

In the first inning against J.A. Happ, Rob Refsnyder hit a one-out double into left field. After a two-out walk, Starlin Castro stranded the two runners. In the second inning, the Yankees got a pair of base runners when Chase Headley hit a double and Austin Romine reached on an infield single. After a fly out forced the runners to hold, Aaron Hicks beat out a potential double play, scoring Headley and putting the Yankees on the board, 1-0.

CC Sabathia pitched well through the first three innings but the Blue Jays got to him in the fourth inning. Josh Donaldson led off with a single but Edwin Encarnacion grounded into a double play, confirmed by a review. The double play proved to be huge as Justin Smoak hit a solo home run to left center, tying the game 1-1.

Following the infield single by Austin Romine, the Yankees managed just four base runners from the second inning on.

CC Sabathia gave the Yankees more than enough opportunity to seize the win. In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. He generated three double plays but exited the game after giving up a double to start the seventh inning.

Dellin Betances took over following the double and got a strikeout of Justin Smoak to start his outing. He got the second out but a walk of Devon Travis opened the door for the Blue Jays. Kevin Pillar broke the 1-1 tie with a single to right field. After a stolen base put two in scoring position, Darwin Barney followed suit and hit a single to right field, scoring two runs and giving the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead that was not threatened in tonight’s Yankees loss.
