Yankees Game 54: Offense erupts but pitching comes up flat

New York Yankees 5 – Baltimore Orioles 6

The offense showed up for tonight’s series opener in Baltimore but the pitching struggled to make it work.

After a scoreless first inning by Nathan Eovaldi and Chris Tillman, the Orioles got a lead off double from Mark Trumbo. He advanced on a ground out and scored on a single by Pedro Alvarez. Eovaldi doused the rally with a double play and by the fourth inning, the Yankees got to work with the bats.

With one out in the fourth inning, Brett Gardner walked and Carlos Beltran hit the two-run home run to right center field to change the 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. Alex Rodriguez went back-to-back with Beltran with his seventh home run of the season to right field.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mark Teixeira was replaced at first base with Rob Refsnyder, who recently practiced taking reps at first base last week. Teixeira exited the game with right knee discomfort.

The 3-1 lead became 3-2 when Chris Davis went deep in the fourth inning. Austin Romine recovered that run in the fifth inning with a solo home run of his own.

After a scoreless fifth inning by Nathan Eovaldi, the Yankees added another run when Chase Headley brought home Didi Gregorius with a run-scoring single. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Eovaldi found himself in a tough spot despite his 5-2 lead. After a lead off single by Hyun Soo Kim, Eovaldi got the first out but Chris Davis walked and Mark Trumbo added a single to load the bases. Matt Wieters hit a single, scoring two runs to bring the Orioles within one. This single knocked Eovaldi out of the game with runners on first and second, with only one out.

Kirby Yates came on in relief and got the first out with a strikeout but Jonathan Schoop hit a double, tying the game 5-5 and finishing the line for Nathan Eovaldi.

In 5 1/3 innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed five runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Two of the runs scored after he exited the game.

The Orioles scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning against Dellin Betances. After a pair of singles led off the inning with runners on the corners, a soft ground out from Manny Machado put the Orioles ahead for the eventual win.
