Yankees game 56: Early offense enough for Warren

Los Angeles Angels 2 – New York Yankees 8

The Yankees started early and never looked back in the second game of the three-game series.

After a scoreless top of the first inning from Adam Warren, the Yankees went to work against Garrett Richards. Brett Gardner started the inning with a walk. Chase Headley followed with a single to right field and Alex Rodriguez walked to load the bases before the first out was recorded. The first out came on a sacrifice fly so the productive out gave the Yankees the early lead. A wild pitch plated the Yankees second run.

Brian McCann kept the early outburst going with a two-run home run.

His ninth home run of the season went to right center field and doubled the Yankees lead to four. Carlos Beltran returned to the lineup with a single and Didi Gregorius followed with a single of his own, advancing to second on the throw in. A poor decision by Albert Pujols allowed Stephen Drew to reach after a play was overturned on a challenge. Ramon Flores was the second out of the inning but the lineup turned over in the first inning and Brett Gardner got a second at-bat. The Yankees center fielder cashed in on his second plate appearance in the first inning, hitting a two-run single to right field, knocking Richards out of the game before the first inning was over.

In just 2/3 of an inning, Garrett Richards allowed six runs on five hits, walking two and striking out one.

The Yankees got one more run in the second inning when Carlos Beltran got his second hit of the game, a run-scoring single. Seven runs is more than enough offense for Adam Warren.

After three perfect innings, Erick Aybar reached on an infield single to break the early bid for perfection. Pitching with a runner on, Warren began to struggle. Mike Trout was retired on a rocket line drive to Chase Headley but a pair of walks loaded the bases in the inning. Warren escaped without allowing a run thanks to a double play by David Freese.

The Angels got on the board in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly but Mike Trout got the Angels on the board with a bang in the sixth inning. The Angels center fielder went the other way, taking advantage of the short porch in right with his 15th home run of the season, a solo home run to score the Angels’ second run of the game. Adam Warren got two more outs in the seventh inning before a walk ended his night. Justin Wilson got the last out of the inning and finished off a great line for Adam Warren.

In 6 2/3 innings, Adam Warren allowed two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two.

A bases loaded walk by Mark Teixeira added to the Yankees lead in the eighth inning and unlike the ninth inning last night, tonight featured no heart-wrenching drama. Chris Capuano worked hard for the final out of the game, utilizing 13 pitches to finally strikeout Carlos Perez to end the game.
