Seattle Mariners 10 — New York Yankees 2

The Yankees lose an ugly game in Robinson Cano‘s final visit of the regular season.

In the second inning, a leadoff triple by third baseman Kyle Seager put David Phelps in a bad spot right away. Catcher Mike Zunino would single home the first run of the game and with Felix Hernandez, that could potentially be enough. In the fourth inning, Kyle Seager would hit his second triple of the game but this was much more unusual. Left fielder Brett Gardner made a sliding attempt on a shallow fly ball in foul territory but it deflected off his glove and hit off the glove of Derek Jeter in a close play. Jeter, with his back to the play, assumed the ball had fallen foul but he would be alerted to the fact that it was an in-play ball. Seager would score two batters later on a ground out.

A two-run lead for Felix Hernandez in Yankee Stadium, is over, right?

With one out in the fourth inning, Brian McCann hit a single to center field. Yangervis Solarte would follow with his second hit in as many at-bats against Felix Hernandez, this one for two bases. With two on and two outs, Ichiro Suzuki would hit a single up the middle that deflected off the heel of Hernandez on the mound. Shortstop Brad Miller would mistakenly try to barehand the ground ball that had no play on the speedy Ichiro, but the ball got under his hand. McCann had already scored but Solarte would come around to score to tie the game at two.

The Yankees scored two against Felix Hernandez and tied the game.

David Phelps would make the tie game stand until his last inning, the seventh inning. A leadoff double and a walk put two on and no outs. Left fielder Endy Chavez would attempt a sacrifice bunt but David Phelps would unsuccessfully try to get the lead runner out at third. The bases were loaded for Brad Miller, who hit a single up the middle for two runs and the lead. Matt Thornton would come in for Phelps and Michael Saunders would hit a single under the glove of first baseman Kelly Johnson for two more runs.

Over six plus innings, David Phelps allowed six runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four.

Alfredo Aceves would follow after Thornton and gave up four more runs in the ninth inning on two home runs in a game that featured zero errors on the scoreboard and a number of unattributed errors on the bases and in the field.

Win – Felix Hernandez (8-1)

Loss – David Phelps (1-3)
