Yankees game 57: Sweep extends streak to six

Los Angeles Angels 2 – New York Yankees 6

Fireworks in more ways than one in today’s series finale against the visiting Angels.

In the first inning, CC Sabathia got a rude greeting after retiring the first batter. Mike Trout delivered a line drive solo home run to center field to put the Angels ahead by one. Albert Pujols went back-to-back with Trout, hitting his 15th home run of the season to left field, putting the Angels ahead by two.

After the first inning, CC Sabathia settled down, at least in regards to the game.

In the third inning, Sabathia gave up a leadoff single to Erick Aybar. A throwing error by Chase Headley, his 13th of the season, allowed Trout to reach base. With runners on the corners and two outs, David Freese flew out to right field and both runners tagged up to advance. This decision proved to be a mistake by the elite center fielder as Mike Trout was thrown out at second base by Carlos Beltran. The double play occurred before Aybar crossed home plate, negating the run from scoring. Wow.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jose Pirela led off with a double against C.J. Wilson, just missing a home run. A fly out and a ground out later, the Yankees were on the board with one run.

Including the extremely beneficial double play in the third inning, CC Sabathia retired 10 in a row to give the offense time to come back.

In the fifth inning, Chris Young led off the inning with a game-tying, solo home run to left center field. Didi Gregorius and John Ryan Murphy would get on base with a pair of singles before Brett Gardner put the Yankees ahead.

The three-run home run by Brett Gardner broke the tie and gave the Yankees the three-run lead.

In the sixth inning, CC Sabathia allowed a pair of baserunners with one out, including a walk, before generating a double play to get him out of the inning with the lead. Unfortunately for Sabathia, his exit out of the game was not entirely up to him.

Following the double play, Sabathia had words for home plate umpire Dan Bellino regarding the strike zone. The heated words, which should not be repeated, kids, ultimately got the Yankees lefty ejected. Manager Joe Girardi joined the conversation and proceeded to get himself ejected as well. Several players and coaches had to restrain Sabathia as he let his feelings be known.

In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out seven. Despite the ejection, Sabathia provided a quality start that gave the Yankees a solid chance to win.

Justin Wilson pitched in the seventh inning, walking one but getting a double play afterwards to keep the Angels off the board.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jose Pirela hit his first career home run into the visitor’s bullpen in left center field. Congratulations to Jose Pirela.

The dominant Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the sweep of the Angels and extend the winning streak to six.
