Yankees game 58: Chipped away in defeat

Oakland Athletics 7 — New York Yankees 4

The Yankees started the game but the A’s finished it.

The Yankees offense got started in the third inning against A’s starter Jesse Chavez. Ichiro Suzuki started the third inning with a walk. With one out, Brett Gardner would hit a single to put runners on the corners. Gardner would steal second successfully and Derek Jeter would get an infield single to score the first run of the game. Jacoby Ellsbury would continue swinging a hot bat when he put a three-run home run into right center field. The Yankees put up four in one inning.

Enjoy the four runs, the Yankees bats would be silent after the third inning.

In the fourth inning, left fielder Yoenis Cespedes would hit a solo home run to center field. In the fifth inning, a pair of singles and a ground out put runners on second and third with one out. Jed Lowrie would hit a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game.

In just 4.2 innings, Vidal Nuno allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.

The bullpen was responsible for the remainder of this game. The first man out of the bullpen, Matt Daley would give up Cespedes’ second home run of the game, this one to right field. After a throw in the dirt by Derek Jeter, Matt Thornton would be the next one called on. Brandon Moss would single and Kyle Blanks would walk to load the bases. Alberto Callaspo would tie the game with a deep fly ball to left field, caught just before the wall.

Making his major league debut, Jose Ramirez got the responsibility of keeping the game tied at four.

After a deep fly ball to right field, Josh Donaldson would welcome the rookie with a bomb to left field to give the A’s the lead. Two more runs would score in the ninth inning but that would be insurance for a frustrating loss for the Yankees.

After the third inning, the Yankees only had one inning that featured more than one hit. The hitting woes had a flash of greatness, but a night of woes.

Win – Jesse Chavez (5-3)

Loss – Jose Ramirez (0-1)
