Cleveland Indians 3 — New York Yankees 4

Mark Teixeira hit a home run for the second consecutive game in tonight’s 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians.

A Drew Stubbs infield single is the only hit David Phelps allowed in tonight’s start. David Phelps limited the Indians to just one hit over his six innings of work.

Walks were a problem for Phelps though. In the fifth inning, Phelps would begin the inning with a pair of walks to Mark Reynolds and Jason Giambi but would settle down after a visit to the mound and get out of the inning unscathed. Using 102 pitches through six innings, Phelps struck out seven but walked four too.

Left-hander Scott Kazmir got the ball for the Indians and ran into trouble in the third inning. Right fielder Lyle Overbay would hit a double to start the inning and Chris Stewart would single him to third but would be caught between the bases on another instance of ill-advised baserunning. Ichiro Suzuki would single in the first run of the game, scoring Overbay. Jayson Nix would single to put two on for Mark Teixeira. The Yankees first baseman would pull a 3-1 pitch just fair along the left field line for a three-run home run, his second home run in as many games. The home run capped off a four-run third inning and with Phelps as effective as he was, four runs seemed like enough.

Joba Chamberlain took his usual role of seventh inning but did not make it a smooth appearance by any means. A leadoff walk would be followed by two outs but a single would put two on for Drew Stubbs. The Indians outfielder would go with a 1-1 slider to the short porch in right field for a three-run home run, putting the Yankees lead at just one. Joba would exit to a chorus of boos and Boone Logan would finish off the inning with the lead intact.

David Robertson got the eighth inning and it was a little more rocky than he would have liked. A leadoff walk and single put the go-ahead run on base with former Yankee Nick Swisher at the plate. Swisher would get a hold of a 1-1 fastball but it was a laser to second, becoming a double play and allowing fans and Robertson to exhale a bit. A ground out would keep the lead in the Yankees favor and hand the game to Mariano Rivera.

The Yankees closer would strikeout Mark Reynolds and former Yankee Jason Giambi before getting a fly out for the final out. This was Rivera’s 21st save of the season.

Win – David Phelps (4-3)

Loss – Scott Kazmir (3-3)
