Yankees Game 61: CC stays strong in fifth straight Yankees win

Detroit Tigers 0 – New York Yankees 4

With the Yankees reaching .500 again, CC Sabathia looked to lead the push to a winning record at this point in the season.

After CC Sabathia pitched a scoreless first inning, the Yankees went to bat against Mike Pelfrey. After the first out, Brett Gardner and Carlos Beltran got on base with a pair of singles. A walk by Alex Rodriguez loaded the bases and a walk of Brian McCann brought in the first run of the game. After a strikeout of Starlin Castro for the second out, Didi Gregorius hit a fly ball to left field that went over the head of Justin Upton for two runs. On the play, McCann was thrown out at third base to end the three-run first inning.

In the third inning, Brett Gardner walked to start the inning. After a throwing error by James McCann trying to pick of Gardner, the Yankees left fielder advanced to third base. Carlos Beltran let him cruise home with a single to center field to make it a four-run lead.

CC Sabathia rarely ran into serious trouble in his start tonight. In the second inning, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez got on base but a pop out and a ground out stranded them. In the fourth inning, Sabathia issued a pair of two-out walks but generated a fly out. In the fifth inning, Ian Kinsler and Cameron Maybin reached on a pair of singles but Miguel Cabrera grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In seven scoreless innings, CC Sabathia allowed five hits and walked two. He struck out four.

Since May 1 (6 starts, 38.0 innings), CC Sabathia has pitched to a 0.71 ERA.

After seven scoreless, Dellin Betances pitched a perfect eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts. Anthony Swarzak added a scoreless ninth inning to complete the shutout. The Yankees have won five in a row and have pushed themselves over .500 with tonight’s win.
