Yankees game 62: Orioles help Yankees beat Orioles

The Yankees prevent the sweep to the Orioles with some assistance from the Orioles.

In the first inning against rookie Mike Wright, Brett Gardner led off with a single. Two outs later, Mark Teixeira blooped a hit down the left field line and plated the first run of the game. Adam Warren looked to keep the early run he received but the Orioles would strike back. Manny Machado started the bottom of the first with a single. One out later, Adam Jones hit a single of his own. Chris Davis walked to load the bases and Nolan Reimold came through in the ideal scoring situation by hitting a two-run single to center and giving the Orioles the lead.

The Yankees had their own ideal scoring situation but could they succeed like the Orioles?

In the second inning, Stephen Drew led off with a bloop single. Didi Gregorius hit a single by deflecting it off the pitcher. John Ryan Murphy hit an infield single to load the bases with no outs. What kind of luck is this? Good, if the Yankees can make the most of it.

Mason Williams grounded into a force out at home for the first out. The Yankees did score one on a sacrifice fly but they should not be proud of that inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Yankees only scored one run.

Warren gave the run back in the third inning but the Orioles would give it back on their own.

In the fifth inning, Chase Headley, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira walked to load the bases with no outs. At this point, the Orioles starter was replaced. Lefty Brian Matusz entered to face Garrett Jones and walked him to tie the game at three. Matusz bounced back with a pair of strikeouts. Just when it looked like the Yankees were going to waste another great opportunity, John Ryan Murphy succeeded with a base hit off the glove of a diving Machado.

Two runs scored on the double by Murphy and just like that the Yankees took the lead. Adam Warren allowed two to reach before he could record the final out of the fifth, eliminating him as the potential winning pitcher. Chasen Shreve helped him get the last out.

In 4 2/3 innings, Adam Warren allowed three runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Along with 1 1/3 innings from Shreve, Justin Wilson provided two perfect innings as a bridge to the current closer, Dellin Betances. Betances walked one but followed it with the third out on a strikeout to nail down his third save of the season.

Win – Chasen Shreve (3-1)

Loss – Mike Wright (2-2)

Save – Dellin Betances (3)
