New York Yankees 3 — Seattle Mariners 2

The Yankees scored early and the Yankees scored last in tonight’s series opener in Seattle.

With one out in the first, Derek Jeter hit a single up the middle and later, with two on and two out, Carlos Beltran hit a double down the left field line off of Hisashi Iwakuma to score Jeter. Brian McCann would get the second hit with runners in scoring position to score the second run of the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Yankees’ starter Vidal Nuno would have a hard time finding that third out. Robinson Cano would hit a double into left field and Cole Gillespie would bring home Cano with a single to center field. The Mariners would run themselves out of the first inning when Gillespie was caught stealing.

To start the second inning, Kyle Seager hit a deep fly ball to right field. The uniform is different but Safeco Field’s right field is still familiar ground for former Mariner Ichiro Suzuki. The 12-year Mariner once called Safeco Field home and his leaping grab at the wall showed it still is familiar grounds.

This would not be the lone time the defenses bailed out their soft-tossing lefty.

In the fourth inning, Vidal Nuno would find himself in hot water after a one out walk and single put runners on the corners with one out. Mike Zunino would fly out to shallow left field that kept the runner from scoring. Right fielder Michael Saunders would put a drive into the ball that pushed center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the wall where he caught the potential tying run or more.

Thank you defense and thank you Safeco Field. The spacious dimensions and speedy outfield did Vidal Nuno all the favors he could afford. In 5.2 innings, Vidal Nuno allowed one run on four hits while walking one and striking out two.

After finishing off the sixth inning, Dellin Betances also got the seventh inning. After getting the first out, Betances would hit Zunino with a pitch. A wild pitch would move him into scoring position. Left fielder Dustin Ackley would hit a single just over the glove of a leaping Brian Roberts and the game-tying run would score. Vidal Nuno settles for the no decision.

Recent history this season has shown the Yankees have a hard time dialing up the offense one more time to fight back a comeback by the opposition. Tonight was not one of those games.

With one out in the eighth inning, Derek Jeter would hit a ground-rule double to deep left center. Against lefty Charlie Furbush, Jacoby Ellsbury would fall behind on two great pitches but the third pitch would catch too much of the plate. Ellsbury would hit the pitch into right field for a run-scoring single and the Yankees recovered the lead. Teixeira would line out into a double play right after the Yankees reclaimed the lead but the damage needed was done.

After a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning by Adam Warren, closer David Robertson got the call in the ninth for the save. Robertson would work a little harder to get the first two strikeouts but he would, A walk would follow the first two strikeouts but a third strikeout of pinch-hitter John Buck would seal the win.

Nice to see the offense is capable of turning it on in more than just one inning.

Win – Dellin Betances (4-0)

Loss – Hisasahi Iwakuma (4-3)

Save – David Robertson (15)
