Yankees Game 63: Michael versus Michael goes the Tigers way

Detroit Tigers 4 – New York Yankees 1

After splitting the first two games with the Detroit Tigers, Michael Pineda wanted to make Old Timers’ Day a highly celebrated day.

Through the first three innings, Michael Pineda looked like the Pineda of late. He allowed two base runners but stranded them both and had a second inning in which he struck out the side. Unfortunately, the fourth inning looked like the early, struggling Pineda.

Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez got on base with three consecutive singles and Cabrera scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Castellanos. A single by Justin Upton loaded the bases yet again but Pineda got the last two outs, stranding the bases loaded and allowing just one run.

For the offense, the Yankees got a lead off double in the third and fifth inning against Michael Fulmer but neither came around to score. In the fifth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner walked with two outs but Carlos Beltran flew out to right field. In six innings, Michael Fulmer allowed no runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three.

In the top of the fifth inning, Ian Kinsler drew a lead off walk and Cameron Maybin hit a single to put runners on the corners. A strikeout of Miguel Cabrera held the runners on the corners but a ground out by Victor Martinez brought in the Tigers’ second run of the game.

In six innings, Michael Pineda allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Not an awful outing by Pineda but command of the slider did elude him at times, like the third inning.

Anthony Swarzak came on in relief in the seventh inning. After a lead off single to Mike Aviles, Ian Kinsler built on yesterday’s five-RBI performance with a two-run home run to left field.

The Yankees managed to score a run in the eighth inning when Jacoby Ellsbury scored on a single by Chase Headley but the Yankees fell short. In the ninth inning, Francisco Rodriguez struck out the side and holding the Yankees off the bases to end the game.
