Yankees Game 65: LeMahieu, Arenado too much for Nova, Yankees

New York Yankees 3 – Colorado Rockies 6

Wrapping up a quick two-game series, the Yankees looked to Ivan Nova to get them back to the winning ways.

Through the first three innings, Rockies starter Chad Bettis held the Yankees hitless. Ivan Nova could not claim the same praise. In the first inning, Nova worked around a pair of hits and in the second inning erased a leadoff hit with a double play. He was unable to emerge from the third inning unscathed though. After getting the first out, Nova surrendered a double to D.J. LeMahieu. He came around to score on a single by Nolan Arenado to put the Rockies ahead by one.

In the fourth inning, the Yankees had a response to the deficit. Jacoby Ellsbury snapped the streak of nine straight retired with a single. Starlin Castro got a one-out single but Didi Gregorius came through with the important hit as he hit a single to left field, scoring Ellsbury.

On a soft ground ball single by Aaron Hicks, catcher Tony Wolters made a wide throw to first base, allowing both a run to score and the remaining two runners to advance into scoring position but ultimately failed to add more than two runs onto the scoreboard.

Ivan Nova pitched a scoreless fourth inning but the fifth inning was problematic for the righty. After a leadoff walk of Charlie Blackmon, the Rockies center fielder stole second base and scored on a single by D.J. LeMahieu. Nolan Arenado dealt the big blow, a two-run home run to put the Rockies ahead 4-2. Then with two outs and one in scoring position, Mark Reynolds hit a run-scoring single to put the Rockies ahead by four.

In five innings, Ivan Nova allowed five runs on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees rallied with two outs. Chase Headley started the two-out rally with a single. Didi Gregorius reached on a single of his own and Aaron Hicks brought home Headley with a bloop single to left field, bringing the Yankees within two.

With Aroldis Chapman on to try and hold the Rockies silent in the eighth inning, D.J. LeMahieu had himself an afternoon. With two outs and one on, LeMahieu hit a deep fly ball to right center field for a run-scoring triple, giving the Rockies a 6-3 lead that they did not surrender to complete the two-game sweep of the Yankees.
