Yankees game 66: Beltran belts clutch home run in sweep

Miami Marlins 4 – New York Yankees 9

The Yankees bust it open to take the home series with the Miami Marlins.

After a perfect first inning by CC Sabathia, the Yankees went to work against the Marlins’ Mat Latos. Brett Gardner and Chase Headley greeted him with a pair of singles. Alex Rodriguez kept the good times going with a single to center field, scoring Gardner. After the first out was recorded, Brian McCann was walked to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Yankees appear stunned by the prime scoring opportunity as Carlos Beltran struck out and Didi Gregorius popped out to end the inning with just one scoring.

Through the first three innings, CC Sabathia was perfect. But he ran into trouble in the fourth inning.

Dee Gordon led off the fourth inning with a line drive down the right field line, easily racing around the bases for a triple.

After the first Marlins hit, Christian Yelich plated the run on the second out of the inning. After four innings, the game is tied.

In the fifth inning, Jeff Baker led off with a single. Justin Bour got on base the hard way, getting hit by a pitch. After one out was recorded, the Marlins broke the tie with a sacrifice fly.

In the sixth inning, Giancarlo Stanton does Giancarlo Stanton things. The major league home run leader added to his total with a line drive to left field to provide insurance for the Marlins.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Yankees started a comeback. The rally began with two outs when Mason Williams hit a double to center field. Brett Gardner made himself the tying run right at home plate when he delivered a two-run home run into right center field. His sixth home run of the season tied the game at three.

In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed three runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

After a scoreless seventh inning by Chasen Shreve, the Yankees got to one of their former farmhands. Lefty reliever Mike Dunn came to the mound after retiring the last two in the sixth inning. With one out, Brian McCann went the other way with a single to left. Carlos Beltran broke the tie when he hit a two-run home run to left center field.

In the eighth inning, Marlins reliever Sam Dyson became the most hated player in the ballpark. Entering the eighth inning, Alex Rodriguez had collected two hits and was one away from 3,000 hits in his career. After a walk of Chase Headley, Alex Rodriguez came to the plate and he could easily have not brought his bat. Dyson avoided the strike zone at all costs and walked Rodriguez on four pitches. The fans let him hear it as the opportunity at witnessing history was taken away from them. After the first out of the inning, Brian McCann hit a single to center field and added to the Yankees two-run lead. A wild pitch scored another run and Chris Young hit a double that scored another. The Yankees continued to add on more runs with a sacrifice fly, ultimately increasing the Yankees lead to six.

The Marlins scored one in the ninth inning but one is not enough to prevent a sweep at home of the Miami Marlins.

Win – Chasen Shreve (4-1)

Loss – Mike Dunn (1-4)
