Yankees Game 67: All-around offense backs Masahiro Tanaka to win

New York Yankees 8 – Minnesota Twins 2

After winning yesterday’s game, the Yankees looked to score runs behind Masahiro Tanaka to keep the winning going.

Against lefty Pat Dean, Jacoby Ellsbury opened the game with a single and came around to score on a double to left-center field by Rob Refsnyder. Carlos Beltran followed with a two-run home run to left field.

Pat Dean recorded the first out but three runs already came around to score. Starlin Castro followed the first out with a walk and Chase Headley reached base with a double and Castro scored on a single by Didi Gregorius for a four-run first inning before Masahiro Tanaka touched the mound.

Masahiro Tanaka pitched a scoreless first inning but gave up a run in the second on a ground out. The offense went quiet in the second inning but they woke up again in the third.

Alex Rodriguez and Starlin Castro started the third inning with a pair of singles. After a walk to Chase Headley loaded the bases, Didi Gregorius brought in a run on a fielder’s choice. After a steal of second put two in scoring position, Austin Romine joined the hit parade with a two-run double to put the Yankees ahead 7-1.

After three innings, every Yankee in the batting order had a hit. The Yankees added the eighth run of the game in the fourth inning but Masahiro Tanaka easily made the lead stand. After the third inning, Masahiro Tanaka allowed four singles in the next five innings without allowing another run to score.

In eight innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Nick Goody got the ninth inning and gave up a solo home run to Eduardo Escobar but finished off the game and continued the Yankees (brief) winning ways.
