Yankees game 67: Gardner brings home 3 on A-Rod 3K night

Alex Rodriguez gets his milestone in a big way.

After a scoreless first inning by Adam Warren, the Yankees came to the plate against Justin Verlander. Brett Gardner got on base with a single but got picked off. Chase Headley was the second out and cue the cameras, Alex Rodriguez stepped up to the plate.

On the first pitch he saw from Verlander, Alex Rodriguez made history.

Joining Derek Jeter and Wade Boggs, Alex Rodriguez is the third player to hit a home run for his 3,000th career hit. Congratulations to Alex Rodriguez.

In the top of the second inning, Adam Warren looked to keep the lead he just received but the Tigers potent offense cannot be kept silent. Victor Martinez started the inning with a single and Yoenis Cespedes followed with a double. One out later, Nick Castellanos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Catcher Bryan Holaday hit a single to left field, scoring two runs and giving the Tigers the lead.

After witnessing 3,000 with a bang, the other Yankees were feeling it too.

In the second inning, Didi Gregorius hit his third home run of the season, tying the game at two. The Yankees had two more reach on a pair of singles but could not get the lead back. Through the next two innings, the game would remain tied until Brett Gardner heated up.

After a Mason Williams single with one out, Brett Gardner hit a fly ball to right center for a two-run home run.

The seventh home run for Brett Gardner put the Yankees ahead by two.

Adam Warren retired 11 in a row before some defensive goofs helped the Yankees starter out. After Ian Kinsler hit a single, Miguel Cabrera hit a single to right field. Carlos Beltran fielded the ball and attempted to throw out Kinsler advancing to third base. On the throw, Headley could not come up with the throw and with the ball rolling away, Kinsler made an attempt for home. Headley came up throwing from the third base dugout fence, getting Kinsler out at home to keep the lead at two.

In the seventh inning, the Yankees got on base against Verlander. After one out, Brett Gardner bunted for a single. Chase Headley hit a sharp single that deflected off the leg of Verlander, going into right field and allowing Gardner to advance to third. Despite a visit to the mound, Verlander made the case to stay in the game but followed that with a wild pitch, scoring the Yankees’ fifth run of the game when Gardner slid across home plate.

Tom Gorzelanny entered for Verlander with two outs but Mark Teixeira hit a single to right field and put the Yankees ahead by four.

In the eighth inning, the Yankees rallied for more offense with two outs. Chris Young entered the game for Mason Williams and hit a line drive double to left. Brett Gardner continued his great night with a single to left field, scoring Young, Gardner’s third run batted in of the evening.

In eight innings, Adam Warren allowed two runs on seven hits without a walk and seven strikeouts.

Tonight will be remembered for the 3,000th hit, a great night at the plate for Brett Gardner and a great start by Adam Warren.
