Yankees game 69: Tigers tee off on Tanaka

Detroit Tigers 12 – New York Yankees 4

The Tigers teed off to avoid the sweep against Tanaka.

After getting the first two outs of the inning, Masahiro Tanaka gave up a single to Miguel Cabrera. Victor Martinez made the two-out single count when he hit a deep two-run home run to right center field to put the Tigers ahead by two. On a ground ball to Didi Gregorus, the misplay allowed Yoenis Cespedes to reach, extending the inning to the wrong batter if you are Tanaka. J.D. Martinez got a hold of an 0-1 pitch from Tanaka and put it into the loading gap beyond the left center field wall for a two-run home run. The Tigers scored four runs, two earned, on two home runs and all of the offense happened with two outs in the inning.

The Tigers kept it going in the second inning. Victor Martinez hit a two-run single to center for two more runs to put the Yankees in an early six-run hole. Brian McCann got the Yankees on the board with his 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning. After the second out of the inning, Chris Young hit a single and Stephen Drew walked. Brendan Ryan made the small two-out rally into a crooked number when he hit a single to center field, scoring Young and giving them two runs on the inning.

Masahiro Tanaka pitched a pair of scoreless innings but the Tigers got to him one more time.

In the fifth inning, J.D. Martinez made it a multi-home run game when he hit a deep fly ball to Monument Park in center field. The solo home run extended the Yankees’ deficit to seven.

In five innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The three home runs allowed is a career-high for Tanaka.

In the sixth inning, a pair of major league debuts took the mound in relief of Masahiro Tanaka. Danny Burawa entered the game and got his first out, a ground out by Ian Kinsler. After a walk of Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez hit a single and Cespedes hit a run-scoring single to plate the eighth Tigers run. Then, J.D. Martinez made it a day to remember. Going the opposite way, Martinez hit his third home run of the game into the second deck in right field.

After getting the second out, the second major league debut took place.

Lefty Jose De Paula made his major league debut and his first batter caught him by surprise. Andrew Romine jumped on the first pitch and took De Paula deep to left field.

In 2/3 of an inning, Danny Burawa allowed four runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. Jose De Paula took the remainder of the game on his shoulders and pitched 3 1/3 innings. In his relief appearance, he allowed one run on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Welcome to The Show, rookies.

Despite this ugly game, the Yankees did take the series and another positive note was how Stephen Drew finished today’s game. In the seventh inning, Stephen Drew took Anibal Sanchez deep when he pulled his hands in and kept the ball just inside the right field foul pole for his 10th home run of the season. In the ninth inning, Stephen Drew went deep one more time, to right center field for his 11th home run of the season and his third multi-home run game of the the year.

Win – Anibal Sanchez (6-7)
