Yankees game 70: Pineda ineffective in big loss

Philadelphia Phillies 11 – New York Yankees 8

The Phillies came into the Bronx and showed that even the worst teams can have good nights.

Michael Pineda took the mound for the Yankees and recorded the first two outs of the game. Rookie Maikel Franco hit a line drive solo home run to left center field to get the Phillies on the board early. The Yankees did not let that lead last long with Kevin Correia taking the mound for Philly.

Brett Gardner started the inning with a bunt single.

Chase Headley hit a line drive to right and Gardner advanced to third on the hit. After the first out was recorded, Brian McCann productively got a sacrifice fly to score the Yankees’ first run. Carlos Beltran followed with a double to left center that scored Headley and put the Yankees ahead. Garrett Jones looped a base hit over the shifted infield in right field but right fielder Domonic Brown threw home and got the slow-footed Beltran at home easily on an ill-advised send to end the inning.

After a scoreless second inning that featured two Phillies reaching base with two outs, the Phillies continued to hit the less-than-effective Michael Pineda.

In the third inning, Ben Revere hit a single to center field. He stole second before Cesar Hernandez walked on a full count. Maikel Franco loaded the bases on a sharp infield single. Ryan Howard went the other way with a two-run single to put the Phillies ahead by one. Domonic Brown grounded into a double play but a run scored on the outs to extend the Phillies lead to two.

In the fourth inning, three consecutive singles by the bottom third of the Phillies lineup loaded the bases, putting Pineda in immediate trouble. After a force out at home, Cesar Hernandez hit a double to right field to score two runs. Maikel Franco kept the hot bat going with a single to right to extend the Phillies lead to six. The single by Franco was the last batter Michael Pineda faced. Chris Capuano got the last two outs but an 8-2 deficit is a large hole left by Pineda.

In just 3 1/3 innings, Michael Pineda gave up eight runs on 11 hits with one walk and shockingly, no strikeouts.

With the Yankees down by six, the deficit looked insurmountable but a few Yankees had something to say.

After getting two outs, Correia gave up a single to Chris Young. Stephen Drew hit a single of his own and Brett Gardner made it a ballgame. On a deep fly ball to right field, Brett Gardner hit his eighth home run of the season, a three-run home run to bring the Yankees within three.

Chris Capuano pitched a scoreless fifth inning but the Phillies offense was relentless. With one out, Cesar Hernandez hit a single and Maikel Franco continued to have a night to remember when he hit his second home run of the night, a two-run home run to extend the lead back to five.

Brian McCann hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to bring it within four. The Phillies got the run back in the ninth inning but that did not stop the Yankees from rallying in the ninth against a familiar foe. Against closer Jonathan Papelbon, Alex Rodriguez led off with a double to left center field. Then with one out, Carlos Beltran hit a single and Garrett Jones hit a double to left center, scoring two runs and bringing the Yankees within three. Didi Gregorus and Chris Young were the final two outs and the Yankees fell short in a high-scoring game.
