Yankees game 71: Betances tagged with first career loss

Philadelphia Phillies 11 – New York Yankees 6

In the first inning, after CC Sabathia avoided danger with two on by getting a pair of strikeouts, the Yankees rallied against Phillies starter Sean O’Sullivan. Brett Gardner continues swinging a hot bat with a double to deep left center field. After Gardner advanced on a ground out by Chase Headley, Alex Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring the first run of the game.

In the second inning, Garrett Jones opened with a leadoff home run to deep right field, adding to the Yankees lead, but the Phillies began to rally in CC’s worst inning.

In the third inning, Ben Revere led off with a single. Cesar Hernandez followed with a double to left field, getting by Chris Young, allowing Revere to score from first base. Brett Gardner kept the hot bat hot when he smoked a 1-0 pitch to right field, retrieving the two-run lead. The Yankees had the chance to score more with two on and one out but a line out and a ground out doused the rally.

In the fourth inning, the Phillies rallied and the thorn of last night got the Yankees one more time.

After recording the first out, CC Sabathia gave up a double to left field by Andres Blanco. Cameron Rupp tied up the game with his first career home run. The lineup turned over with two outs and the top of the order kept the inning alive. Ben Revere and Cesar Hernandez reached on a pair of singles and Maikel Franco made use of the Yankee Stadium short porch. A high fly ball got three rows into the crowd for a three-run home run that gave the Phillies the lead.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees rallied the only way they know how, with power.

Chase Headley started the fifth inning with a milestone. His 100th career home run brought the Yankees within two. Alex Rodriguez went back-to-back with Headley for his 16th home run of the season.

Two batters into the fifth inning and the Yankees were within one. With one out in the inning, Carlos Beltran hit a double to left field. Against lefty Elvis Araujo, Chris Young hit a two-out double to left field and just like that the game was tied.

CC Sabathia had exited in the fifth inning with two outs but is off the hook after the Yankees rallied back.

In 4 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed six runs on eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, Brett Gardner got on with a one-out walk. After Jeff Francoeur had a fly ball deflect off his glove in left, Brett Gardner reached third base and Chase Headley stood on second base. With one out, any ball beyond the infield would put the Yankees ahead. Alex Rodriguez did not get the productive out when he grounded into a fielder’s choice at home for the second out. Ultimately, the Yankees had two in scoring position with less than two outs and were unable to score a run.

In the seventh inning, Carlos Beltran led off with a double. Garrett Jones advanced him to third and Chris Young walked to put runners on the corners. With less than one out, the Yankees could not come up with the right ball in play again. Didi Gregorius popped out and Jose Pirela struck out to end the inning. Another opportunity goes by.

After Dellin Betances helped Justin Wilson get the last two outs in the eighth inning, he came back out for the ninth inning. Ben Revere started the ninth inning with a double. Cesar Hernandez got hit by a pitch and that Maikel Franco guy crushed the Yankees again. The rookie Franco hit a double to left field, just pass the diving Chase Headley.

Two runs scored and the Phillies took the lead. For the sake of pitch count, Betances was removed with two on and one out for the rookie Nick Rumbelow, making his major league debut. After a walk to the first batter he faced, Andres Blanco cleared the bases with a triple to right field, putting the Phillies up by five and decisively ending tonight’s game.

Unfortunately for Dellin Betances, this was the first loss for him in his career. The Yankees will look to prevent the sweep on the return of Nova.
