Los Angeles Dodgers 6 — New York Yankees 0

Yankees held to just three hits in tonight’s 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees split today’s doubleheader with the Dodgers.

Starting the second of two games today, Phil Hughes had struggles right from the beginning. Skip Schumaker would lead off the game with a single to left field. Rookie outfielder Yasiel Puig would pull another trick out of his bag and bunt for a single with the infield playing back, respecting his power. Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez would follow with back-to-back singles to right field to put the Dodgers ahead by two before Hughes could record his first out. After getting his first out, Hughes would give up another single to load the bases but would induce a double play to get out with far less damage than many expected him to give up.

A pair of doubles by diving outfielders Thomas Neal and Brett Gardner would bring in another run in the third inning. The Dodgers would get two more runs off of Phil Hughes in the fifth inning. He would have a solid sixth inning but with the damage done, his night was already much like most of this season, bad.

Phil Hughes final line in his six innings was five runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

On the other end, Chris Capuano was on the top of his game with the Yankees lineup. Two of the three hits that Capuano surrendered did not leave the infield as shortstop Hanley Ramirez attempted to make plays on ground balls to his right and left. Lyle Overbay reached for the first baserunner for the Yankees on an infield single to the right of Ramirez. In the fourth inning, Jayson Nix hit a single up the middle that Ramirez made a diving stop on but could not throw Nix out at first. The next batter, Robinson Cano, would hit a line drive into right center that center fielder Andre Ethier got to and would get Cano at second base. The Yankees did have Nix on third base but a pair of fly outs by Vernon Wells and Thomas Neal would strand Nix.

Through six innings, Chris Capuano shutout the Yankees and allowed three hits without a walk while striking out four.

Adam Warren came in on relief of Hughes in the seventh inning and the first batter he faced was Yasiel Puig. The first pitch Warren threw would be hit with opposite field power as Puig hit his first Yankee Stadium home run into the short porch for his fifth home run of his career.

Win – Chris Capuano (2-4)
