Yankees game 72: Nova returns, snaps the losing streak

Philadelphia Phillies 2 – New York Yankees 10

Today marked the return of Ivan Nova.

After a scoreless first inning that included warned benches after Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, the Yankees got it going in their second inning against Cole Hamels. Chris Young started the second inning with a single to center field. John Ryan Murphy walked and Didi Gregorius tried to sacrifice himself to advance the runners. Fortunately for the Yankees, a little miscommunication in front of the plate made the throw to first late, loading the bases with no outs. On a ground ball to third by Jose Pirela, third baseman Andres Blanco threw home, but the ball got away from the catcher and two runs scored. The Yankees loaded the bases one more time with two outs but a ground out ended the inning. Two runs scored on the error but the Yankees could not strike for more.

In the first inning, the warnings issued did not sit well with Girardi. In the third inning, the Yankees manager got ejected when he did not agree with a call on a check swing.

This was his second ejection of the season.

The Yankees got going against Hamels in the fourth inning.

Didi Gregorius hit a shallow fly ball to shortstop Freddy Galvis but he lost it in the sky, allowing the Yankees shortstop to reach second. Jose Pirela followed with a walk and Brett Gardner came up with a single to center field to put the Yankees ahead by three.

Chase Headley added a run on the board with a double to left field. After the first out was recorded, Mark Teixeira hit a single for the fifth run of the game.

After Hamels was replaced by reliever Jake Diekman, Chase Headley led off the sixth inning with a single off of the third baseman’s glove. Alex Rodriguez followed with a line drive to left field. Chris Young extended the lead to six when he hit a two-out single to right field.

In the seventh inning, Domonic Brown reached on the first error for Ivan Nova. With one out, Cody Asche reached with a single. Ivan Nova retired the second out of the inning before he was removed from the game. Ivan Nova received a great ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd. Bryan Mitchell retired the last out of the inning, keeping the pitching line clean.

In 6 2/3 scoreless innings, Ivan Nova allowed three hits with two walks and struck out one on 92 pitches. Great season debut for the right-hander.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Didi Gregorius led off with a walk against reliever Justin De Fratus. Jose Pirela brought home Gregorius with a double to deep left center. After a pair of walks, Alex Rodriguez hit a single to left center to score two runs. After a wild pitch, Mark Teixeira hit a single to center field and the Yankees took a double digit lead.

After 1 1/3 scoreless innings by Bryan Mitchell, Diego Moreno took the mound for the ninth inning. Ryan Howard started the inning with a double to right field. Domonic Brown ended the shutout with a single to center field. Andres Blanco hit a double to put two runners in scoring position. A ground out plated the second Phillies run but that was all the Phillies mustered in a missed attempt.

The Yankees needed a strong showing by their starting pitcher and Ivan Nova did that. Nearly seven scoreless innings saved the bullpen and set things right as the Yankees head to Houston.
