Yankees game 73: Nuno victim of the long ball

Vidal Nuno Yankees_ Indians 2013

Baltimore Orioles 6 — New York Yankees 1

Vidal Nuno was the victim of the home run in today’s game.

In the first inning, center fielder Adam Jones hit a laser into left field that was a without a doubt solo home run. In the fourth inning, Adam Jones would not hit a home run but he did walk to start the inning. Slugger Nelson Cruz would hit the home run though. His 23rd home run of the season was a two-run home run.

The Yankees would find the long ball too. Mark Teixeira would hit his 12th home run of the season into the Yankees bullpen. This was just a solo home run to make it a 3-1 game. The home run was Teixeira’s 150th home run as a Yankee.

A throwing error by Kelly Johnson in the fifth inning put a runner on base and with one out, Steve Pearce would hit the third Orioles home run off of Nuno. The two-run home run made it a 5-1 game.

Over 6.1 innings, Vidal Nuno gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks. All of the runs came on the long ball as Nuno served up three home runs.

The Yankees had a few opportunities against Bud Norris and the Orioles’ bullpen but they could not take advantage of it. In the first inning, the Yankees walked twice but Gardner was caught stealing and the inning ended shortly after that. In the fifth inning, Brian Roberts led off with a double but was stranded after three consecutive outs ended the inning. In the seventh inning, Carlos Beltran walked and Brian Roberts hit a single with one out but the Orioles would get the next two outs, ending the inning. Finally, in the eighth inning, Derek Jeter and Jacoby Ellsbury would reach base on back-to-back singles but two outs to first would end the opportunity as well.

Four opportunities fell by the wayside and so did the Yankees four-game winning streak.

Win – Bud Norris (7-5)

Loss – Vidal Nuno (1-4)
