Baltimore Orioles 8 — New York Yankees 0

The Yankees bats could not get started in a special day of the season.

After Masahiro Tanaka worked through a pair of singles, the Yankees looked to have a fantastic start to the bottom half of the first. Brett Gardner hit a line drive down the right field line for what looked like three bases. The Baltimore Orioles would challenge the tag at third base and Gardner would be ruled out for briefly coming off the base.

After getting two outs in the second, second baseman Jonathan Schoop would hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Orioles a one-run lead. Tanaka would be his usual self up until his last inning of the game. From the Schoop home run, Tanaka got 13 of the 15 batters he faced out.

The seventh inning was his last and worst inning of the day. After a single and double put runners in scoring position right away, The bottom of the lineup would hit two productive outs and the Orioles generated insurance runs against an outstanding pitcher.

A telling fact about the Yankees offense today is that the Yankees only had two baserunners in one inning three times. In the third inning, Derek Jeter would come up with two on but would ground into an inning-ending double play. In the fourth inning, Kelly Johnson came up with two on but he would hit a line drive right into the glove of the pitcher Chris Tillman. The last good opportunity to score came in the seventh inning after a walk and a fielding error but Brett Gardner grounded into a force out at second base.

Over seven scoreless innings, Chris Tillman allowed four hits and walked four while striking out two. The Yankees were hitless with five opportunities with runners in scoring position.

After Tanaka exited, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six, the bullpen took over and put the game out of reach. Adam Warren would give up a pair of singles to start the eighth inning. A dangerous force at third base featured a takeout slide on third baseman Kelly Johnson by Steve Pearce. An intentional walk of Chris Davis would load the bases for J.J. Hardy, who cleared the bases with a double into the right center gap. Another run would score in the inning and David Huff gave up a solo home run in the ninth but it was simply extra runs to an ultimately sad loss on a fun day.

Win – Chris Tillman (6-4)
