Yankees game 74: Young goes yard to win it

New York Yankees 3 – Houston Astros 2

It took some late game power to turn the game in the Yankees favor.

Through the first two innings, Nathan Eovaldi and Vincent Velasquez held the teams scoreless. The Yankees threatened in the third inning with a two-out double from Brett Gardner but he was stranded. The Astros rallied against Eovaldi in the third inning and they drew first blood.

With one out in the third inning, Hank Conger hit a double to center field. Then with two outs, Carlos Correa hit a line drive that brought home Conger and put the Yankees in the early 1-0 hole. While the Yankees were held scoreless by Velasquez, the Astros added more runs to the scoreboard.

Wrapped around the Jose Altuve infield single in the sixth inning were two outs but a pivotal stolen base made all the difference. Evan Gattis took a big rip for a just right bloop that fell between the triangle of Gregorius, Drew and Gardner.

Altuve scored on the bloop single to put the Astros ahead by two.

In the seventh inning, Vincent Velasquez got the first out before Carlos Beltran and Garrett Jones hit a pair of singles. With the potential go-ahead run at home plate, the Astros turned to the strength of their bullpen. Reliever Will Harris came in and came up against Chris Young. On a 1-1 count, the Texas native Chris Young got a fastball up in the zone and gave it a drive into the seats in short left field.

The three-run home run, his ninth of the season, turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead just like that.

In 6 1/3 innings, Vincent Velasquez allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. After the Yankees received the lead, Eovaldi was given his seat on the mound to watch the remainder of the game.

In six innings, Eovaldi allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six.

Chasen Shreve followed the six innings by Eovaldi by striking out the side in the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Justin Wilson recorded the first two outs before walking Luis Valbuena. Deciding to take no chances, closer Dellin Betances entered the game for the four-out save and started it with a strikeout of Evan Gattis. Dellin Betances finished off tonight’s good comeback win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, notching his fifth save of the season.

Win – Nathan Eovaldi (7-2)

Loss – Will Harris (4-1)

Save – Dellin Betances (5)
