Yankees game 75: Six home runs in shootout win

New York Yankees 9 – Houston Astros 6

Offense would be plentiful in today’s wild game.

In the first inning, Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer ran into trouble right away. Brett Gardner started the game with a double to right field. After the leadoff double, Oberholtzer struggled with the strike zone and home plate umpire Rob Drake when he walked Chris Young and Alex Rodriguez to load the bases. After Mark Teixeira popped out, Brian McCann cashed in. On a 1-0 pitch, the Yankees catcher hit a deep grand slam to right field to put the Yankees ahead by four with one mighty swing.

In the second inning, Brett Oberholtzer struggled some more.

Brett Gardner got a one-out double in the second inning and Chris Young kept the hometown heat hot with a two-run home run into the seats in shallow left field. After the home run, Oberholtzer expressed his frustrations when he threw inside on Alex Rodriguez, promptly getting him ejected.

In 1 1/3 innings, Brett Oberholtzer allowed six runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout.

A six-run lead with Masahiro Tanaka on the mound should be safe…right?

After retiring the first batter in the third inning, Domingo Santana hit a double to left field. Chris Carter followed with a double of his own and the Astros plated their first run of the game. After the second out of the inning, George Springer hit a single to left and the Astros scored the second run.

While Tanaka surrendered two runs, reliever Roberto Hernandez shut down the Yankees. In 3 2/3 scoreless innings, Roberto Hernandez allowed one hit but walked three and struck out two.

The Astros continued to chip away when Chris Carter hit a two-out laser of a solo home run to left field to bring the Astros within three.

In the fifth inning, Masahiro Tanaka issued a leadoff walk to George Springer and that quickly came back to haunt the Yankees righty. Carlos Correa hit a two-run home run the other way to right field to bring the Astros within one. After a visit to the mound, the Astros did not take their foot off the gas pedal. Jose Altuve followed the two-run home run with a game-tying solo home run. After a 6-0 lead through two innings, the game was tied at 6-6 after five innings.

In five innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed a career-high six runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. The three home runs he allowed were a career-high too.

After five innings, it was a new ballgame for the bullpen to determine. Bryan Mitchell supplied 1 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Chasen Shreve went 2/3 of an inning, striking out a key batter with the bases loaded to keep the game tied until the eighth inning.

Against reliever Pat Neshek, Brett Gardner walked to start the inning, his fourth time reaching base in the game. On a high chopper to third base by Chris Young, third baseman Luis Valbuena made a high throw to second and Altuve could not keep his foot on the base. Neshek got the first out of the inning but Mark Teixeira got the benefit of a close pitch being called a strike. After a second life in the at-bat, he hit a double off the left center wall on the next pitch, scoring the two go-ahead runs.

Justin Wilson followed the go-ahead inning with a shut down bottom of the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Chase Headley from the right side against lefty Tony Sipp, hit a high fly ball to deep left center for his eighth home run of the season.

The three-run lead was safe in the hands of closer Dellin Betances. He surrendered a ground-rule double to right field but a ground out to Teixeira wrapped up a wild game in Houston.
