New York Yankees 3 — Toronto Blue Jays 8

There were few bright spots in a series opener like the one in Toronto.

With one out in the first inning, Melky Cabrera would hit a double deep into center field off of Yankees starter Chase Whitley, who has won his last three starts. Adam Lind would follow with a run-scoring single to right field. In the second inning, Juan Francisco, Munenori Kawasaki and Anthony Gose would hit three consecutive singles and the bases would be loaded with no outs. A ground out by Jose Reyes would score the second run of the game. Melky Cabrera would hit a run-scoring single and Adam Lind would hit the big blow.

The Blue Jays designated hitter would hit a three-run home run to center field to make it a six-run ball game. Another pair of hits would make it a seven run game as Whitley may have returned to his true expectations. In the fourth inning, a pair of walks would come back to haunt Whitley when Dioner Navarro hit a run-scoring single, ending Whitley’s night on the mound.

In just 3.1 innings, Chase Whitley allowed eight runs on 11 hits while walking three and striking out two.

The Yankees had a few bright spots in tonight’s game. In the fourth inning, the Yankees got out of the shutout with a solo home run by Mark Teixeira. The 13th home run for the Yankees first baseman went to center field. In addition, the Yankees showed a bit of fight that fans can only hope they carry it into their next game.

A walk by backup catcher Francisco Cervelli would spark a small rally when Carlos Beltran hit a single and Yangervis Solarte, buried in a 0-for28 slump, snapped it with a sharp single to center for the second Yankees run. A third run would come on a Kelly Johnson double but that would be all the fight the Yankees offense could muster.

Another bright spot that cannot be overlooked in terms of the long-term ramifications is the effort by reliever David Huff. Following Whitley’s difficult start, David Huff pitched 3.2 scoreless baseball. Shawn Kelley looked to return to familiar form too, striking out three of the four batters he faced in his inning of work.

Win – Marcus Stroman (4-2)
