Yankees Game 76: No offense supports CC Sabathia

Texas Rangers 7 – New York Yankees 1

After a disheartening early Tuesday morning loss, the Yankees attempted to bounce back behind one of the more effective starters in the current rotation, CC Sabathia.

With one out and one on, Adrian Beltre went the other way with an opposite field, two-run home run to right field, putting the Rangers ahead by two early.

In the first inning, Carlos Beltran hit a line drive to left field that normally becomes a double but the Yankees right fielder stopped at first with what was revealed to be a right hamstring injury that caused him to exit the game.

Cole Hamels worked around a pair of singles in the first inning and cruised through most of his start tonight. CC Sabathia settled down from the rough first inning and was holding the Rangers down. From the second inning to the seventh, CC Sabathia allowed three base runners on two singles and a hit. The Rangers did get to face CC Sabathia in the eighth inning though.

After hitting Shin-Soo Choo with a pitch, Ian Desmond reached on an infield single. A single by Adrian Beltre brought in the third run of the game. Prince Fielder lined a double into right field for a run and the end of Sabathia on the mound. Anthony Swarzak took over but the hits kept coming with Nomar Mazar hitting a pinch-hit, run-scoring single and Rougned Odor adding a single of his own. A double play got the first two outs but Jurickson Prfoar finished the five-run eighth inning with a single too. Entering the eighth inning, the Yankees were within two but by the end of it, they were down by seven.

In seven innings, CC Sabathia allowed six runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Two of the runs Sabathia allowed came after he exited the game.

The Yankees prevented the shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning when Alex Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to score Jacoby Ellsbury. Conor Mullee pitched a scoreless ninth inning but the Yankees went down without scoring in the ninth to lose tonight’s game.
