Yankees game 78: Absent offense behind Nova

New York Yankees 1 – Los Angeles Angels 2

Dancing with danger, Ivan Nova takes a tough loss in his second start of the season.

After getting a ground out back to him, Ivan Nova gave up a pair of singles before finishing off the inning. In the second inning, the Yankees provided run support for Nova against the Angels’ Andrew Heaney.

On a 1-1 pitch, Mark Teixeira hit his 19th home run of the season, a solo home run that managed to be beyond the reach of that center fielder out there.

After a difficult first inning, Nova gave up a pair of singles to start the second inning. He recorded the next two outs before a walk loaded the bases but he kept the Angels off the board yet again. The Yankees got a hit from Brett Gardner with two outs in the third inning but he could not come around to score. Mike Trout hit a single in the third inning but was thrown out by Brian McCann when he tried to steal second base. In addition to the caught runner on the bases, Nova retired the next six in a row, four on strikeouts as he appeared to be settling down.

The slim one-run lead in support of Nova was erased in the sixth inning.

Albert Pujols led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to straight center field, tying the game at one. Before you could come to terms with the tying home run, Erick Aybar went back-to-back and hit a home run to center too, giving the Angels a lead after three pitches.

After recording the first out and giving up a double, Ivan Nova was replaced in the game.

In 5 1/3 innings, Ivan Nova allowed two runs on eight hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Eight hits and two walks indicate he clearly should have been in a greater deficit but he put together a solid start with minimal offense behind him.

To replace Ivan Nova, once a reliever and a starter and now a reliever again; Adam Warren came in to quickly get the final two outs of the inning.

In the seventh and eighth inning, the Yankees got a runner on base via walk and error but both were erased on double plays.

In 2 2/3 innings, Adam Warren provided scoreless relief while allowing one hit and one walk but striking out two. Outstanding return to the bullpen.

The Yankees went down in order with two strikeouts and a ground out against closer Huston Street. The Yankees offense mustered two hits and two walks with one batter reaching on an error.

Win – Andrew Heaney (1-0)

Loss – Ivan Nova (1-1)

Save – Huston Street (23)
