The Yankees put up 18 hits, including five home runs, in tonight’s 14-1 win over the Cleveland Indians.
Andy Pettitte got tonight’s start looking to win again after eight strong against the Boston Red Sox. Tonight, he didn’t need to be sharp but he was on his game yet again. In seven innings, Pettitte allowed just one run on five hits and three walks. The lone run came on a solo home run by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. But the one run would look like a bug on a windshield on the bulldozer that drove through Cleveland tonight.
With two outs in the second inning, the Yankees put together an impressive rally. Two singles and a walk would load the bases for Brett Gardner. The speedy outfielder would hit a two-run single and Robinson Cano would follow with a line drive over the centerfielder for two more runs. This put the Yankees ahead by four, but it was just the beginning.
In the third inning, Ichiro Suzuki, who got two hits yesterday, got one today but it was a line drive home run into right field. This was his first home run of the season for the Japanese outfielder. Robinson Cano would build on his pair of home runs yesterday with a two-run home run tonight. This was his third home run of the season and the Yankees were ahead by seven. Also worth noting, after the Cano home run, Indians starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco threw up and in on the next batter, Kevin Youkilis, and would be ejected for this.
In the sixth inning, Kevin Youkilis would get some level of revenge, with a two-run home run to left field, his second of the season. Lyle Overbay would get in on the home run action as he hit his first of the season in the eighth inning. Robinson Cano would bring in his fifth run of the game with a double into right field. The Yankees would substitute some of the regulars like Travis Hafner with Brennan Boesch. But Brennan Boesch must have gotten the memo as he hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the eighth inning, his first of the season.
When the dust had cleared, the Yankees put up 14 runs on 18 hits. Brett Gardner and Robinson Cano led the team with four hits each, two doubles each, bringing in a total of seven runs. Lyle Overbay got three hits including a double and Francisco Cervelli got two hits as well.
