Boston Red Sox 8 — New York Yankees 5

Chase Whitley is unable to rebound from a poor start as the current decline continues.

After the first three career wins for Chase Whitley, the Yankees rookie starter has started to stumble in a downward direction. Entering today’s game, Stephen Drew was hitting .125 but in the second inning, Drew gave the Red Sox the lead after a one-out single with Mike Napoli on second base. In the third inning, Brock Holt walked and with one out Dustin Pedroia hit a single to put two on for the slugging David Ortiz. The Red Sox designated hitter would put the 0-1 pitch deep into the right field bleachers for a three-run home run.

In just four innings, Chase Whitley allowed five runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.

In the third inning, a high throw by Brock Holt allowed Ichiro Suzuki to reach base and with two outs, Derek Jeter hit a single to right field to put the Yankees on the board. In the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira made the three-run deficit two with a home run to right field just staying fair. With one out, Carlos Beltran would make it a one run game with a home run of his own. The Yankees offense came to life to make it a one-run game and Red Sox starter John Lackey irate.

The last batter Whitley faced was in the fifth inning with a four-pitch walkΒ  as the Yankees looked to keep the game within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Shawn Kelley followed Whitley’s example and proceeded to walk Brock Holt and Daniel Nava to load the bases with no outs. Dustin Pedroia would hit a bloop single into shallow right field to score two runs and create the three-run deficit again. A fourth run would score on a broken play with runners on the corners.

The Yankees would strike back quickly in the fifth inning when Ichiro Suzuki hit a line drive past the diving right fielder, rookie Mookie Betts for a triple. Brett Gardner would jump on the next pitch and put the Yankees’ fourth run on the board with a double to right field too. A pair of ground outs would score the Yankees fifth run as it was a two-run game again.

David Huff, who finished the sixth inning, started the seventh inning with a walk and a pair of singles before stud reliever Dellin Betances was put in a tough task. With the bases loaded and no outs, Dellin Betances was asked to minimize the damage and he realistically did just that. After getting a strikeout of Daniel Nava, Dustin Pedroia would fly out to center field for a run but that would be all the Red Sox would get.

Bases loaded with no outs and Dellin Betances allowed just one inherited run.

Carlos Beltran would hit a double with one out in the sixth inning and Kelly Johnson quickly followed with a single to center field. Beltran would get the call to attempt scoring from second on the line drive to center but he would be gunned down at home easily and the Yankees scoring opportunity disappeared almost as quickly as it was generated.

The Yankees would lose tonight’s game despite showing occasional glimpses of fight on both sides of the game.
