Yankees Game 80: Yankees lose early

New York Yankees 3 — Baltimore Orioles 11

Ugly start by Phelps is more than enough for today’s 11-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

In the Yankees fourth straight loss, starter David Phelps stumbled out of the gate and was not able to recover. After getting the first out, Phelps would give up three consecutive singles and the Orioles would go ahead by one. Then slugger Chris Davis hit his league-leading 29th home run of the season to put the Orioles ahead by four. By the time the inning was over, the Orioles already had their first time through the lineup.

On the top of the first inning, the Yankees got two outs before they got a rally going. The Yankees stringed together three consecutive singles (the last, ironically, a Baltimore chopper by Ichiro Suzuki) but Zoilo Almonte flew out to deep right field and the Yankees would not score.

After a clean second inning by Phelps, it seemed like he had set things right.

Wrong.

In the third inning after getting the first out, Phelps would walk two around a single to load the bases for Chris Dickerson. The Orioles’ designated hitter would single in two runs on a deflected ground ball by shortstop Jayson Nix. Ryan Flaherty would deliver the final blow to Phelps when he took the right-hander deep for a three-run home run of his own to cap off a five-run third inning. By the time the inning ended, Ivan Nova was on the mound looking to keep the Orioles to their nine-run lead.

For Phelps, he allowed nine runs on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout in just 2.1 innings. He allowed two home runs.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees offense showed dim hints of life with some assistance by Orioles’ starter Zach Britton. The Orioles’ left-hander started the inning with a walk to Jayson Nix and a single by Robinson Cano. After a fly out, Ichiro Suzuki would walk to load the bases for Zoilo Almonte again. This time, Almonte’s fly out to right field would result in a run as the first Yankees run came across on the sacrifice fly. David Adams would walk to reload the bases and Lyle Overbay would hit a ground ball to first base. First baseman Chris Davis would have trouble fielding the routine ground ball and the error would bring in the Yankees second run. Pinch-hitter Travis Hafner would hit a deep fly ball to left field that would be caught at the warning track, ending their rally.

Just when the Yankees managed to bring in two, Ivan Nova slipped up and gave it back. Chris Davis would strike again for his second home run of the game and his 30th of the season. For Nova, he gave the Yankees 5.2 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on six hits.
