Tampa Bay Rays 6 — New York Yankees 3

The Yankees were mixed up in a see-saw affair in today’s matinee game.

After a scoreless first inning by Vidal Nuno, the Yankees generated some instant offense to back up the lefty. Brett Gardner led off the bottom half of the first inning with his eighth home run of the season. The Yankees would get a pair of singles by Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran but they would be stranded on bases.

In the third inning, the Yankees would give the run back. The dreaded lead off walk would put Nuno in trouble as a two-out double put two runners in scoring position. A passed ball by McCann would allow the tying run to score.

In the bottom half of the third inning, Brian McCann would provide some pop in the lineup. His second hit of the game would be his 10th home run of the season. The two-out home run would give the Yankees back their lead.

In the fourth inning, the Yankees would give the run back. After a one-out double by Logan Forsythe, Sean Rodriguez hit a single to right field. The run would score but Rodriguez would be thrown out at second base.

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Alfonso Soriano would open the inning with a single. Ichiro Suzuki would walk but the next two batters would get out. With two outs, Brett Gardner would come through with a run-scoring single to right to give the Yankees back the lead for the third time.

In the fifth and sixth inning, the Yankees would follow the theme of the day and give the run back, only this time they also gave up the lead.

With one out in the fifth inning, Desmond Jennings would hit a single and Ben Zobrist would follow with a double to put runners in scoring position. Brandon Guyer would hit a single to left field where Jennings would score but Zobrist would be cut down at home plate to keep the game tied.

After a lead off single off of Nuno, Shawn Kelley would be called on to keep the game tied. Unfortunately for Kelley, third slider is the charm for Sean Rodriguez. The Rays’ shortstop would see three sliders in his at-bat and the third one would not return to Kelley. The two-run home run to deep left center gave the Rays their first lead after tying the game on three different occasions.

In five plus innings, Vidal Nuno allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits while walking two and striking out five. Prior to exiting the game, Nuno did give the Yankees an opportunity to win the game.

In the seventh inning, against Cesar Ramos and Juan Carlos Oviedo, the Yankees got two on with just one out but Carlos Beltran and Kelly Johnson would strike out against Oviedo, ending the scoring threat.

The Yankees would get a double by Brian Roberts in the eighth inning would be the last hit as the Yankeesย  losing streak extends to five and the Yankees are now under .500.
