Yankees Game 84: Silent offense in Chicago

New York Yankees 0 – Chicago White Sox 5

After putting up 20 hits, the Yankees looked to support Michael Pineda in the series finale.

Following a scoreless first inning between Michael Pineda and Miguel Gonzalez, a frequent problem for Pineda reared its ugly head in the second inning. Pineda managed to retire the first two batters in the second inning but the third out proved to be a problem. Brett Lawrie hit a single before a passed ball moved him to second and a walk of Dioner Navarro put two on. Still with two outs, Avisail Garcia hit a run-scoring single and J.B. Shuck bounced it in deep left field for a ground-rule double, scoring another run. Tim Anderson made it a four-run second inning with a two-run double. All four runs came with two outs in the inning.

Following the second inning, Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single to right field and tried to stretch it into a double but Adam Eaton gunned him down with a throw to punish Ellsbury for the poor decision on the bases.

While the offense continued to flounder, Michael Pineda pitched three scoreless innings after the second inning but began to bend in the sixth inning. With one out, Melky Cabrera walked and Todd Frazier executed the hit-and-run to put runners on the corners. A fielder’s choice ground out allowed the White Sox’s fifth run to score.

In six innings, Michael Pineda allowed five runs on on five hits and three walks. He struck out five. Four of the five runs came in the second inning as he struggled to get the third out.

One run or five runs, the Yankees could not solve Miguel Gonzalez and the White Sox pitching.

Didi Gregorius got on base in the fifth inning with a single. He advanced to second on a ground out, then with the infield shifted to the right side, took third as it was unmanned. Unfortunately, Aaron Hicks popped out, stranding Gregorius at third base.

Gregorius had a three-hit night with a two-out double in the seventh inning but was stranded yet again. The Yankees put two on base in the ninth inning but came up empty in tonight’s shutout loss.

Following the six innings by Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi emerged from the bullpen for his first relief appearance since 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Coming out of the bullpen with a pair of fastballs exceeding 100 MPH, Eovaldi pitched two scoreless innings allowing two walks and striking out one.
