Yankees game 84: Teixeira has a highlight night

Oakland Athletics 4 – New York Yankees 5

Mark Teixeira put together an All-Star highlight reel in tonight’s game.

In the first inning, CC Sabathia allowed a leadoff single to Billy Burns. Mark Teixeira assisted the big lefty with a snag on the line drive from Stephen Vogt, tagging Burns and creating the unassisted double play.

Sabathia could not be bailed out in the second inning though.

Billy Butler started the second inning by sneaking a ground-rule double down the left field line, just fair. Brett Lawrie followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Sabathia got the first out on a fielder’s choice at home but it only delayed the inevitable. Josh Phegley and Mark Canha followed with a pair of one-out singles to score two runs and put the Athletics ahead.

The Yankees got a run in the bottom half of the second against Scott Kazmir after an error by shortstop Marcus Semien and a line drive double to right field by Didi Gregorius. The Yankees shortstop was thrown out trying to advance to third but he got the Yankees on the board.

Scott Kazmir exited the game after three innings with what was revealed to be left triceps tightness.

With reliever Evan Scribner on the mound, Mark Teixeira greeted him with a deep solo home run to right field to tie the game at two. Chris Young walked after the home run and John Ryan Murphy was the hit in the hit-and-run that put two on base with an infield single. Young stole third base and Murphy advanced to second on a wild pitch later. Jose Pirela got a hold of a high pitch that he hit deep enough for a sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Yankees the lead.

While the offense got CC the lead, the Yankees struggling lefty was being effective. Following the run-scoring single in the second inning, Sabathia retired eight of the next nine to get him into the fifth inning. He pitched a scoreless fifth inning and recorded the first out in the sixth inning. He gave up a single to Jake Smolinski and that was the end of his night. Reliever Bryan Mitchell finished off the inning and wrapped up the line for Sabathia.

In 5 1/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one.

Despite the length of the start, this was one of his better starts of the season.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mark Teixeira got Scribner yet again, his second home run of the night and 22nd of the season.

With Justin Wilson on the mound, Mark Teixeira made his presence felt in the field again. On a pop up just inside the dugout, but Teixeira caught the pop up and recorded the first out. Dellin Betances recorded three outs in the eighth inning, with assistance by Teixeira again. Pinch-hitter Josh Reddick hit a line drive down the first base line by Teixeira made a diving grab and another dive for the tag at first base to rob Reddick of a hit.

Stephen Drew hit what looked like an insurance run in the eighth inning, his 12th of the season, but it proved to be crucial.

In his return from the disabled list, Andrew Miller took over as closer in the ninth inning. He got the first out before Mark Canha hit a single. What looked harmless ended up being huge when Marcus Semien hit a two-run home run to left field, bringing the A’s within one.

Miller got the second out on a strikeout before Gregorio Petit committed a throwing error to put the potential tying run at second base but a simple ground out to Petit was the third out of the game to notch his 18th save of the season.

Speaking of returns from the disabled list, Jacoby Ellsbury made his return and got one hit in three at-bats tonight, an infield single.

Win – CC Sabathia (4-8)

Loss – Evan Scribner (2-2)

Save – Andrew Miller (18)
