Yankees Game 86: Teixeira Takes It To Former Team

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5 — New York Yankees 6

The former Angel, Mark Teixeira hit two home runs to help the Yankees defeat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by a score of 6-5.

Through 6 innings, Hiroki Kuroda went through 6 innings at a relatively quick pace as the only run he gave up was on a solo home run to the short porch in right field. He would have trouble going through the heart of the Angels lineup in the 7th inning. After a single and a hit batter, Home Run Derby participant Mark Trumbo took Kuroda deep beyond the visitor’s bullpen in left field for a three-run home run to make a 2-1 lead into a 4-2 deficit for the Yankees. Kuroda would get oneΒ  more out in the 8th before giving up a run-scoring, ground-rule double to Albert Pujols to end his outing. Through 7.1 innings, Hiroki Kuroda gave up 5 runs on 8 hits. Rafael Soriano would pitch with the lead and get his 21st save of the season.

Mark Teixeira was on the Angels in 2008 prior to signing with the Yankees in 2009. Mark Teixeira would bring the big lumber to face the Angels to start the second half of the season following the All-Star Break. In the 3rd inning, Teixeira hit a laser into left field for a two-run home run to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The Yankees would lose the lead in the 7th by a score of 5-2. Mark Teixeira would come up with two on in the 8th and would deliver a second home run into left field to total his RBIs at 5 for tonight. But Russell Martin brought in the game-winning run with a single to right field after many long runs of poor hitting throughout this season. In an odd way to end tonight’s game, Russell Martin blocked a ball in the dirt with a runner on 1st and was able to throw out the runner attempting to advance to get the final out of the game.

Win – Chad Qualls (2-1)

Loss – Scott Downs (1-1)
