Yankees Game 89: Home runs haunt Pineda in loss

Boston Red Sox 5 – New York Yankees 3

The Yankees welcomed the rival Boston Red Sox to resume the second half of the season.

After going hitless through the first two innings, the Red Sox got to Michael Pineda in the third inning. With two outs in the third inning, Pineda fell behind in the count to Ryan Hanigan and on a 3-1 pitch, Hanigan took Pineda deep to left field for a solo home run. In the fifth inning, Pineda led off with a walk of Jackie Bradley. Falling behind in the count again, Pineda threw a 3-1 pitch and it was sent into the right field bleachers by Travis Shaw for a two-run home run, extending the Red Sox lead to three.

Through the first four innings, the Yankees were held off the bases by Wright but the bid for perfection was ended in the fifth inning. With two outs, Alex Rodriguez reached first base on a slow rolling infield single but was stranded at first base.

Pineda started the sixth inning with a single by Dustin Pedroia and his night ended with a two-run home run from Xander Bogaerts. In five innings, Michael Pineda allowed five runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Chasen Shreve and Nick Goody combined to finish off the sixth inning with the Yankees trailing by five.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Starlin Castro led off with a single and Chase Headley reached base when he was hit by a pitch. After a fly out, Jacoby Ellsbury loaded the bases with a walk. Carlos Beltran followed with a sharp single to right field to score the first two runs for the Yankees. On a ground out by Brian McCann, Ellsbury scored to bring the Yankees within two.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Aroldis Chapman provided a scoreless ninth inning to hold the deficit to two. Unfortunately, the Yankees managed just one hit in the last three innings. The Yankees fell to under .500 after the All-Star break for the first time since 1995.
