Yankees Game 90: Sabathia continues struggles in loss

Boston Red Sox 5 – New York Yankees 2

The Yankees look to take the second game of the three-game series with the Boston Red Sox today.

CC Sabathia masterfully worked around a one-out walk in the first inning by inducing an inning-ending double play. Unfortunately, he was not able to find the double play ball in the third inning. After a poor throw by Didi Gregorius allowed Bryce Brentz to reach, CC Sabathia gave up a one-out single to Mookie Bettts. A walk of Dustin Pedroial loaded the bases and Sabathia needed a double play to escape unscathed. On a ground ball to Gregorius, he transferred to Castro for one out but the throw was just late to first base as a replay confirmed that Xander Bogaerts reached on the run-scoring force out.

Brett Gardner tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when he took Eduardo Rodriguez deep for a solo home run. But the Red Sox got to CC Sabathia in the fourth inning.

With one out, Jackie Bradley reached on a single against the shift and with two outs, Bryce Brentz reached on a slow rolling infield single. Sandy Leon continued the trend of finding holes when he hit a single just by Headley and Gregorius for a run-scoring single to put the Red Sox back ahead.

The Yankees managed two base runners in the fourth inning but Mark Teixeira grounded into an inning-ending double play. CC Sabathia pitched a perfect fifth inning but the sixth inning was the last inning for his day.

After another single by Bradley, Aaron Hill reached on a single with an error that put two into scoring position. With one out, Sabathia fell behind in the count to catcher Sandy Leon and Leon hit a deep three-run home run to left field, putting the Red Sox ahead by four. A single by Betts ended Sabathia’s difficult start.

In 5 1/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Sabathia has allowed at least five runs in his last four starts.

Anthony Swarzak followed with 2 2/3 scoreless in relief of Sabathia. The Yankees got a second run when Chase Headley went deep against reliever Matt Barnes. Eduardo Rodriguez allowed one run in his seven innings of work. The Yankees ultimately went down with another loss today.
