Yankees game 91: Bullpen lets it get away

Phelps

New York Yankees 3 — Cleveland Indians 9

A tired bullpen could not help David Phelps in tonight’s game.

In the first inning, Derek Jeter got an infield single off of Indians’ starter T.J. House. Mark Teixeira would get a hit with two outs and Brian McCann would walk to load the bases. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Francisco Cervelli would strike out and the opportunity was missed.

The Yankees would score in the fourth inning. After a one-out single by Francisco Cervelli, Zelous Wheeler would hit a line drive laser into left field for a two-run home run. The second home run for Wheeler gave the Yankees a two-run lead. In the fifth inning, Francisco Cervelli would take a pitch off his knee to reach base the hard way but he would stay in the game. Zelous Wheeler would hit a single and recently recalled Yangervis Solarte would hit a single to left field to score the Yankees third run of the game.

On the other side, David Phelps danced with danger all game.

In the first inning, two Indians’ batters reached but Phelps would get Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall would be unsuccessful. Through six plus innings of work by Phelps, he would have one inning without a baserunner. Talk about walking on the edge of danger.

In the seventh inning, David Phelps would give up a pair of singles before he was replaced. Matt Thornton would inherit two runners and let his first batter reach base after he deflected a ground ball to center field that kept a run from scoring. The first pitch to Asdrubal Cabrera would hit a fly ball deep off the right field wall and it would clear the bases. The three-run triple erased the entire lead and tied the game.

In six plus innings, David Phelps allowed two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.

The inning did not end after the three runs as Michael Brantley would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Indians ahead by a score of 4-3. After Jim Miller finished the bad seventh inning; Miller continued on for the eighth inning. With one out, Chris Dickerson hit a double and rookie catcher Roberto Perez would hit his first career home run to left field. The two-run home run made it a three-run lead. With one on and two outs, Michael Brantley would hit a rocket line drive that deflected off the wrist of Derek Jeter as another run scored. Carlos Santana would put the last runs on the board with a two-run home run.

Nine unanswered runs after David Phelps exited the game. Extra innings depleted the bullpen of many strong arms, leaving Joe Girardi with Matt Thornton and Jim Miller. The Yankees would split the series in Cleveland as they prepare for a huge in-division series at Baltimore against the first place Orioles.

Win – Carlos Carrasco (2-3)

Loss – Matt Thornton (0-3)
