Yankees Game 92: Nova goes 6 strong in victory

Baltimore Orioles 1 – New York Yankees 2

After preventing a sweep at the hands of Boston, the Yankees continued the homestand with another AL East rival.

In the first inning, the Baltimore Orioles threatened against Ivan Nova. After a lead off single from Adam Jones, Nova retired the next two batters before Mark Trumbo walked and Matt Wieters was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pedro Alvarez popped out to leave the bases loaded.

Kevin Gausman pitched a scoreless first inning but the Yankees plated the first run of the game in the second inning. After falling behind 2-0 to Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees designated hitter took Gausman deep for a long solo home run to the left field bleachers. The Yankees lead did not last long though. Leading off the third inning, Jonathan Schoop took Ivan Nova deep for a game-tying solo home run.

The Yankees manufactured the next run in the third inning. Brett Gardner led off with a single and he advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Carlos Beltran. With runners on the corners, Brian McCann hit a fly ball to center deep enough to score Gardner and put the Yankees back ahead.

After the home run in the third inning, Nova settled down. He was assisted by Chase Headley and Starlin CastroΒ on a single in the fourth inning. As the single got by Headley, the Yankees third baseman caught the lead runner off of second base and generated an out where there was none. Following the nifty play by the infield, Nova retired the final seven in a row to wrap up a strong start.

In six innings, Ivan Nova allowed one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The lone run came on the third inning home run.

Dellin Betances pitched a scoreless seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Andrew Miller allowed a single but induced a double play to maintain the one-run lead. Aroldis Chapman came on for the ninth inning and got the first two outs before walking Nolan Reimold. Along with hitting 105 MPH on the radar gun, Chapman also broke the bat of Ryan Flaherty on a soft ground out to end the game and secure the Yankees victory.
