Yankees game 92: Ryan breaks the tie for the win

Baltimore Orioles 2 – New York Yankees 3

The Yankees score just enough to start a key matchup with the Baltimore Orioles.

After a scoreless first inning by Nathan Eovaldi, that featured a walk but he faced the minimum with a pickoff, the Yankees came to bat against Wei-Yin Chen. Jacoby Ellsbury led off the bottom half of the first inning with a ground-rule double just fair down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt by Brett Gardner, Alex Rodriguez delivered with the productive sacrifice fly to left field, putting the Yankees ahead by one.

In the second inning, Brian McCann and Chris Young led off with a pair of singles. Chase Headley hit a line drive to left field for a run-scoring double. The Yankees stranded the remaining two baserunners with outs by Didi Gregorius, Brendan Ryan and Ellsbury.

While the Yankees provided two runs of support, Eovaldi retired 10 of the next 11 after walking the first batter. Adam Jones reached base on a slight miscommunication between Headley and Gregorius on an infield single in the fourth inning, the first hit Eovaldi surrendered.

In the fourth inning, Chris Young reached on an infield single and Chase Headley also added his second hit of the night but the one-out rally was squandered with a fly out and ground out. Another scoring opportunity was missed in the fifth inning. After a one-out single by Brett Gardner, Mark Teixeira hit a deep fly ball to left center field.

The two-out fly ball bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double that forced Gardner to stop at third base. Brian McCann struck out to end the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Orioles got their first solid contact in play with a single to left center by Jimmy Paredes. Adam Jones hit a soft ground ball that Gregorius could not come up with for the second hit of the inning. Chris Davis popped out for the second out but Matt Wieters picked him up with a two-out single to right field. Justin Wilson came in for relief of Eovaldi but gave up the tying run on a single to right field. The last out was recorded on the bases after the run scored, finishing the pitching line of Eovaldi.

In 5 2/3 innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

After three hitless innings, Eovaldi started to give up harder hit foul balls and worked into longer counts as the game got later. He threw 99 pitches in tonight’s start.

In the sixth inning, an unlikely run producer came through. After the first two outs were recorded, Didi Gregorius hit a single to left field. Brendan Ryan followed up with a double down the third base line and into the left field corner. Gregorius hustled around the bases, scoring from first base and giving the Yankees the lead with two outs in the sixth inning.

Entering the sixth inning, the Yankees were had one hit with runners in scoring position.

In the seventh inning, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out when Alex Rodriguez walked and Mark Teixeira hit a double. Brian McCann was intentionally walked but Chris Young struck out for the second out of the inning. Chase Headley grounded out to first base to end the inning.

Dellin Betances got the last out in the seventh inning before pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Andrew Miller came on for the ninth inning and retired his former team in order, ending the game and getting the win to start a big series with the Baltimore Orioles.
