New York Yankees 2 — Baltimore Orioles 3 (10 innings)

The Yankees and the Orioles were in a tight game that ended in walk-off fashion.

The first run in tonight’s American League East matchup came from the Yankees and a familiar face to the Orioles fans in Camden Yards. On the first pitch to Brian Roberts in the second inning, the former Oriole made it a one run game with his home run to right field. In the third inning, Kelly Johnson would make it a two-run game when tonight’s designated hitter hit his sixth home run of the season.

The Yankees had a chance to increase the lead after Brian McCann started the fourth inning with a single. Ichiro Suuzki would hit a one-out double to right field but the slow-footed McCann would not be able to score on this hit. With runners on second and third, Yangervis Solarte would fly out to shallow center field, not deep enough to score McCann. Kelly Johnson would also fly out and Hiroki Kuroda had two runs to work with.

The two-run lead would be erased on an unusual inning.

In the fourth inning, Steve Pearce would start the inning by being “hit by the pitch” as the inside pitch grazed the uniform. Adam Jones hit a single up the middle that Derek Jeter tried to field and start a double play but it would deflect off of his glove and put runners on the corners. Kuroda would through his first wild pitch of the night and the runners would advance to plate the Orioles’ first run. Hiroki Kuroda got the first out on a strike out but he would throw his second wild pitch to put a runner on third with one out. Chris Davis would hit a fly ball to left field and the tying run would score. Another Oriole batter would wear a pitch but Hiroki Kuroda settled down and kept the game tied.

In one inning, Hiroki Kuroda hit two batters, threw two wild pitches and gave up one hit. The Orioles scored two runs in that inning. Weird.

From the fifth inning to the ninth inning, both teams combined for two hits. Hiroki Kuroda allowed two runs on three hits while walking none and striking out three. He threw three wild pitches and hit two batters. An unusual pitching line to say the least.

In the ninth inning, Brian McCann started with a single against Orioles’ closer Zach Britton. He would be pinch run for with Francisco Cervelli. Brian Roberts attempted to get a sacrifice bunt down but Chris Davis got the lead runner to cancel out the sacrifice. Ichiro Suzuki would strike out for the second out. Solarte would walk but pinch-hitter Zelous Wheeler would ground out and brought on free baseball.

After Dellin Betances gave the Yankees two scoreless innings, Adam Warren got the 10th inning. Manny Machado started extra innings with a double. Ryan Flaherty would be unable to get the bunt down and struck out. Where Flaherty failed, Nick Hundley succeeded with a walk-off single to take the first game of this divisional matchup.

Win – T.J. McFarland (3-2)
