Yankees game 93: Greene great in second start

Greene

New York Yankees 3 — Baltimore Orioles 0

Shane Greene improves to 2-0 with a very impressive start in Baltimore.

After going 4.2 no-hit innings in his first major league start in Cleveland, Shane Greene would repeat his no-hit efforts in Baltimore. Through the first four innings, Greene generated seven ground outs as he kept the Orioles hitless through the first four innings. He would strikeout the first two batters in the fifth inning before Manny Machado would get the first hit of the game for the home team. The Orioles would get a second single but Greene would bounce back and strikeout the last batter to keep the Orioles off the scoreboard.

On the offense, the Yankees had a scoring opportunity in the second inning when Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann would have a single and a walk but Ichiro Suzuki and Kelly Johnson would fly out around a Brian Roberts strikeout to waste the early opportunity. The Yankees would get a scoring chance in the third inning that they would take advantage of. With Gardner and Jeter on base with two outs for Mark Teixeira, the Yankees first baseman would hit a double to right field where Nick Markakis defended. Gardner would score on the play but Markakis would relay a throw that got the trail runner, Jeter, out at home.

After giving up two hits in the fifth inning, Greene would give up a pair of singles in the sixth inning but got a double play and a strikeout to quickly end the inning. a pair of strikeouts highlighted his seventh and last full inning of his great start in a tough hitter’s ballpark.

Shane Greene would go 7.1 innings, allowing four hits and walking two but striking out nine batters. He threw 106 pitches and generated nine groundouts compared to just one fly out. Great job kid.

The Yankees got some insurance runs for their rookie starter in the seventh inning. With two outs and a runner on second, Derek Jeter would come through with a single to left field that brought home the lead runner and made it a two-run ball game. This knocked Orioles’ starter Chris Tillman out of a pitcher’s duel of a game. Jacoby Ellsbury would hit a two-out double off of lefty reliever T.J. McFarland to make it a three-run game. McCann would try to make them pay for intentionally walking Teixeira in front of him but All-Star center fielder Adam Jones would throw Ellsbury out at home to keep the game at three.

Greene, David Huff and Shawn Kelley would put together the eighth inning and David Robertson would get the call for the ninth inning. The Yankees closer would get a pair of strikeouts in his 23rd save of the season as the Yankees have split the first two games of the final series before the All-Star break.
