Yankees game 93: Home runs huge in win

Baltimore Orioles 3 – New York Yankees 4

The Yankees big bats come through in tonight’s win.

After a scoreless first inning that featured an unassisted double play by Stephen Drew, supporting Ivan Nova, the Yankees offense gave their starter room to work.

Jacoby Ellsbury started the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line. Brett Gardner hit a single to center field and Ellsbury easily scored to put the Yankees ahead. Then, after the first out, Mark Teixeira kept the ball fair down the right field line for a two-run home run to increase the Yankees lead to three. In total, eight batters came up to bat in the first inning.

After two hitless innings, Nova surrendered runs in the third inning.

J.J. Hardy started the third inning with a single to left, the first Orioles hit of the night. Ryan Flaherty followed with the first Orioles runs of the night when he hit a two-run home run to right field, bringing the Orioles within one. Nova settled down despite a double by Manny Machado and kept the Yankees one-run lead.

In the fifth inning, Ivan Nova went through a pair of tough at-bats, walking Hardy and Flaherty to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt advanced them into scoring position, Nova kept the ball down and got a pair of ground outs, forcing the runners to hold and keeping them from scoring, maintaining the one-run lead.

One of the better sluggers in the Yankees lineup provided an insurance run in a big way in the fifth inning.

After Gardner struck out for the first out, Alex Rodriguez delivered a moonshot, deep over the visitor’s bullpen in left center field. The solo home run gave Rodriguez 20 home runs on the year and a two-run lead heading into the later innings of the game.

In six innings, Ivan Nova allowed two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out three. Nova got himself into trouble in a pair of innings but minimized the damage and gave the Yankees a good start.

Chasen Shreve was the first reliever out of the bullpen and pitched a perfect seventh inning. For the eighth inning, Dellin Betances pitched a perfect eighth inning that featured two strikeouts and that setup the ninth inning for the closer.

Andrew Miller came on with the two-run lead and got the first two outs, including a strikeout. Chris Davis did not want the game to end without a fight from the O’s when he delivered a home run into the short porch in right field. The home run in the fifth inning loomed large now. Miller bounced back from the home run and easily struck out Jonathan Schoop to end the game and notch another win for the Yankees. With the first two games won, the Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
