Yankees Game 93: Moss Walks Off in Extras

New York Yankees 2 — Oakland Athletics 3 (10 innings)

Brandon Moss walked off in tonight’s 3-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics in 10 innings.

Ivan Nova has a habit of surrendering the extra base hit and tonight reflected that. Of the 9 hits that Nova surrendered over 6.2 innings, 4 of them were doubles. Despite giving up 9 hits, Nova allowed just 2 runs on a sacrifice fly following a triple to lead off the 3rd inning and back-to-back doubles to lead off the 4th inning. Cody Eppley would come in in the 10th inning with 1 out already but 3 consecutive singles would bring in the game-winning run by Brandon Moss to end the game.

Tommy Milone shut down the Yankees bats through 7 innings as he allowed no runs on 6 hits while striking out a career-high 10. Once the bullpen came in, the Yankees were able to get to them early in the reliever’s appearance. Russell Martin welcomed the first reliever, Jerry Blevins, with a home run to deep left field to put the Yankees on the scoreboard and cut the two-run deficit in half. Robinson Cano had two hits tonight to extend his hitting streak to 23 games but his big hit was a 9th inning, game-tying home run off of All-Star closer Ryan Cook’s second pitch upon entering the game. Prior to yesterday’s game, Ryan Cook had not allowed a home run in his career. Last night, Nick Swisher went deep against Cook but Swisher would not make an impact after the exiting with a leg injury in the 7th inning. Tonight’s loss also ended the 43-game streak for the Yankees scoring 3 or more runs.
