The Yankees end the first half of the season with a rain-shortened finale.

The Yankees got some instant offense to open their game against Orioles’ starter Kevin Gausman. Brett Gardner led off with his ninth home run of the season. One batter and one run for the Yankees.The Yankees would manage just three hits through the remainder of the game.

On the other side, the Yankees needed a replacement on the rotation for the injured Masahiro Tanaka. The starter turned reliever turned spot starter, Chase Whitley, got the call. After a clean first inning, Whitley would find himself in trouble. Nelson Cruz led off the second inning with a single to left field. Whitley would get the next two outs but Manny Machado and Caleb Joseph would reach base on a single and a walk to load the bases. Jonathan Schoop would fly out to center field and Whitley escaped the inning unscathed.

Whitley would not fair so well in the fourth inning. Nelson Cruz would start the inning with a walk and the dreaded leadoff walk would come back to haunt Whitley. Chris Davis would take a 1-1 pitch the opposite way and his 15th home run of the season was a two-run home run to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. The third run of the inning would come after a double and some productive outs. Jonathan Schoop would hit a single to right field with a runner on third and the Orioles led by two and ended Whitley’s night.

In a spot start, Chase Whitley lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four.

The game would be in a rain delay with one on in the bottom of the fifth inning with one on and David Huff on the mound. Two hours would pass and the game would be called to put a shortened end to an average start to the 2014 regular season.
